Task force: Screen kids, obesity treatment works
By LINDSEY TANNER, AP Medical Writer Lindsey Tanner, Ap Medical Writer – Mon Jan 18, 7:09 am ET
CHICAGO – An influential advisory panel says school-aged youngsters and teens should be screened for obesity and sent to intensive behavior treatment if they need to lose weight — a move that could transform how doctors deal with overweight children.
Treating obese kids can help them lose weight, the panel of doctors said in issuing new guidelines Monday. But that's only if it involves rigorous diet, activity and behavior counseling.
Just five years ago, the same panel — the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force — found few benefits from pediatric obesity programs. Since then, the task force said, studies have shown success. But that has only come with treatment that is costly, hard to find and hard to follow.
The good news is, "you don't have to throw your arms up and say you can't do anything," said task force chairman Dr. Ned Calonge. "This is a recommendation that says there are things that work."
Calonge said the panel recognizes that most pediatricians are not equipped to offer the necessary kind of treatment, and that it may be hard to find, or afford, places that do. The recommendations merely highlight scientific evidence showing what type of programs work — "not whether or not those services are currently available," he said.
The new advice, published online in the journal Pediatrics, could serve as a template for creating obesity programs. It also might remove one important cost barrier: Calonge said insurers will no longer be able to argue that they won't provide coverage because treatment programs don't work.
Evidence the panel evaluated shows intensive treatment can help children lose several pounds — enough for obese kids to drop into the "overweight" category, making them less prone to diabetes and other health problems. The treatment requires appointments at least once or twice a week for six months or more.
The recommendations follow government reports last week that showed obesity rates in kids and adults have held steady for about five years. Almost one-third of kids are at least overweight; about 17 percent are obese.
The task force is the same group of government-appointed but independent experts whose new mammogram advice startled many women in November. That guidance — that most women don't need routine mammograms until age 50 — is at odds with the American Cancer Society and several doctor groups.
In this case, the task force advice mirrors that of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Many pediatricians already measure their young patients' height, weight and body mass index at yearly checkups.
Task force recommendations in 2005 said there wasn't enough evidence to encourage routine obesity screening and treatment. The update is based on a review of 20 studies, most published since 2005, involving more than 1,000 children.
The review excluded studies on obesity surgery, which is only done in extreme cases.
The panel stopped short of recommending two diet drugs approved for use in older children, Xenical and Meridia, because of potential side effects including elevated heart rate, and no evidence that they result in lasting weight loss.
Calonge, chief medical officer for Colorado's public health department, said evidence is lacking on effective treatment for very young children, so the recommendations apply to ages 6 to 18.
The most effective treatment often involves counseling parents along with kids, group therapy and other programs that some insurers won't cover. But adequate reimbursement "would be critical" to implementing these programs, Dr. Sandra Hassink, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics' board of directors, said in a Pediatrics editorial.
Dr. Helen Binns, who runs a nutrition clinic at Chicago's Children's Memorial Hospital, says such programs are scarce partly because they're so costly. Her own hospital — a large institution in one of Chicago's wealthiest neighborhoods — doesn't have one.
Many families with obese or overweight children can't afford that type of treatment. And it's not just cost. Many aren't willing to make the necessary lifestyle changes, she said.
"It requires a big commitment factor on the part of the parent, because they need to want to change themselves, and change family behavior," Binns said.

ReplyDeleteSome people that are obese don't actualy see obesity as a problem. They see it as a natural occurance of life. While others may become of their metabolism rate which is hereditary. So trying to change children and families into better eating habits will be quite a hard task if the people are not willing.I know if the government came and gave me drugs telling me that I was obese, I would be offended. But if my doctor was the one to tell me I would understand and agree with him.So I think that instead of announcing this new idea they should channel it through our doctors and other health workers trusted by those families. Also, to encourage people to buy things like wii fit and dance dance revolution to enforce a fun, modern way of getting fit.

ReplyDeleteIt seems kinda crazy how all these ideas are focused on fixing obesity in childern. How about move studies toward preventing, look to the home before the child. Some households just need to change what they buy and consume. Not only with this create an effective support system for the child, if done right, it also cuts back on the spending done. If you eat less of fatty sugary things your body tends to grow sick of it. Just like if you eat allot for a few meals and the next few you cut back, your body feels empty when you dont eat as much. But if you try to go back to eat as much as you did before, you leave the table filling like you ate to much. Your body addjusts to what you do to it, no by what it does to you.

ReplyDeleteNot everybody who is fat is that way because of eating habits or not getting enough exercise. For some kids it's a bodily condition that no amount of diet and exersize can solve. I have a friend who only looks fat but it's not fat, because she exersizes alot, she has two times the amount of layers of skins that most people have. The norm for skin layers is seven. I know a grown up who is overwieght yet he can't eat most junk food because it contains wheat and he's alergic to any products containing gluten, he can't exersize to much because it agitates his psoriasis...... I don't exersize at all and I eat a ton, I'm still very thin. It's just because my metabolism is fast. It's kind of sounds wrong when you think about it. Imagine the conversation that would take place, School Doctor: "Sorry I think you're obese, so you have to go to a special program for fat kids," Kid: "I'm not fat. It's a genetic disease...." School Doctor: "Sure it is.".......... Not the most pleasent conversation to be told you're fat, and you know you're not. It's a waist of money. I'm not saying that obesity isn't a problem, but there must be a better, less expensive, nicer way to do it. The way our economy is right now...... We just can't afford a program like that right now.

ReplyDeleteThe problem of obesity is forever constant in society and even more so in developed countries such as the US. As living standards rise, so does obesity. However, genetic disorders also are a factor in the equation but generally, as the article stated, is caused by a person's "lifestyle". "Many aren't willing to make the necessary lifestyle changes" and so programs are forcefully implemented to help them realize the huge benefits of not being obese and assisting them to achieve that goal. The biggest progress that can be made is to establish a firm belief among obese kids, for that will lend them strength when they want to give up.
The root of the problem is lifestyle, which can also be interpreted as a habit for an individual. Such habits are hard to change for anyone, including obese kids. However, with a guiding hand, even hard-to-break habits can turn for the better.

ReplyDeleteAs we all know, America is very much known for its obesity. Not only does obesity occur in children, but it occurs in adults as well. From my viewpoint, it seems as if the speakers in the article are quite negative towards the subject of childhood obesity. I’m not trying to say that it is right, but it just seems as if their concern is based more or less on the fact that “they” think these children are not trying.
I myself am not the exact healthy child they speak of, but I do try and I am pretty sure that there are a lot of other children who are too. The article states, "You don't have to throw your arms up and say you can't do anything," which to me sounds as if they are being the very utmost bias. Maybe I’m being bias, but I do believe that there should be something done about this dilemma. There shouldn’t be anything too extreme done too solve it though. I’m not saying that their solution is, but should definitely be alternate choices.
I am going to end this commentary saying that there shouldn’t be such extreme measure for this problem.
I do not think that all of these procedures are necessary; there is one however. I think that going to see if you are overweight/obese is a good way of making you become aware. The rest is just nonsense. Plenty of people realize their weight maybe unhealthy but if they really cared then they would do something about it, or atleast try. I think part of the whole program thing is more of a political thing to try and make our country look good. I think the choice is up to the overweight/obese people; you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

ReplyDeleteI think trying to change peoples life styles will be difficult but it is necessary. Obesity is a very serious thing that can lead to death. It's kinda like smoking. It's an addiction to something that leads to a slow and sometimes painful death. I think that doctors should tell a person if they're obese and not anyone else because you should trust your doctor. Then they should sit down and talk about some easy changes they can do in there life to lose some wieght and also some reasons because some don't see the point in losing wieght because they're happy eating what they want whenever they want it.
Like one reason would be having more energy. But I don't think that they should throw pills at you left in right or talks about "treatments" that are high in cost. The easiest and best way to lose weight is with people you love supporting you right at your own home. They could even lose wieght too.

ReplyDeleteI believe that obesity is deffinately a problem now more than ever. Not being obese myself, or even fat, i can't really say how it must feel for the people who are but it can't be good.Im pretty sure they have been made fun of at least once before and that never feels good. So i'm guessing the people who are fat are trying different ways to become skinnier. Other than looks there are several other reasons that being obese isn't good for you. There are many different diseases that being over weight can cause. I took Health last semester so i've recently watched the movie 'Super Size Me' and it completely changed my opinion about obesity. If you still think being Obese is okay, you should definately watch it. I think this program should help people even if it is a little expensive. As for changing people's life syles, i don't think that will work because some people live the way they do because of their culture and there is no helping that. plus some people are fat for several different genetic reasons and some just aren't willing to put the effort into becoming skinnier.

ReplyDeleteObesity is at its all time worse. The illnesses that come along with obesity not only are life changing they are life threating.
Though to make this program more helpful to more of the population, the cost of this program should be affordale to a large percenatge of the U.S. The kid that may need it most might not be able to be able to pay for it.
I think it also is kind of ironic that adults are always telling kids to be comftorable in their own skin yet these researchers and telling these kids to lose weight.
Also the reason that obesity within children is a lot greater then it was twenty years ago is because all of the technolgy we have acces to now. Not as many kids are outside playing instead they are inside playing with some gadget.
But some video game companies are helping fight obesity. such as Nintendo's WII Fit. They are making working out "fun".
Obesity is a huge problem and i am glad these people are trying to help the situation instead of just watching it happen. This program will save thousands of lives.

ReplyDeleteI think that they should let them chose if they want to do the program or not. You cannot force people into a program they do not want to do. But I alway recommend that they do it because it can affect their health, but they don't have to take that particular program. Some may not be able to cost that, so they might be able to go to another program that isnt as costly, or do it themselves. It may also not be their fault. It could be a metabolism problem. People should decide if they get to chose if they want to do the program or not, but it is highly recommended because some may affect their health.

ReplyDeleteObesity has been a problem for America for several years now. It seems that year by year it becomes a greater issue. There have been many ideas or better yet attempts to reducing the great percentage of obesed people in this nation. For example pretty much every food and drink out in the grocery store has some sort of replica that is less fattening but continues to taste "great"(which I'm sure it doesnt). Inventions like the Wii fit that supposely make you lose weight while you're still having fun or those belly straps that make you sweat sitting down. In my opinion, all of these attempts are completely pointless. And now the government is offering special treatment for all who are obesed. Obesity doesnt just happen(of course unless you have some sort of health issue) it is a problem that can certainly be taken care of before it becomes too serious. One is just to lazy to go exercise or simply doesn't want to eat the right amount of food and watch out for what one is eating. One has to be convinced in order to do anyhting. The treatment offer will most likely be rejected by many especially because of how they will take it,as an insult. It;s nice to see that the government cares but let's face it the plan will not work.

Obesity is a serious problem here in America. 17% of all children are obese, that is sad. ALmost one in five kids are obese. Houston is one of the top five fattest states in the country. America has more McDonalds than any other country, and is one of the fattest in the world. Obesity causes diabetes, heart disease, and death. These children are starting out in life with a disadvantage. Most of them won't live past fifty. Any treatment that can possibly work, I believe we should pursue. If it can give obese children the stepping stone that they need, it should be used no matter what the cost.

ReplyDeleteIt kind of sad how many children are obese in America. I think that if there is way to treat obesity for the children then all the parents and the children that have problems should make the effort to even try it out to see if it works. Even if the plans do not work or if no one has the time to join, there are still many ways to work out at home, feeling shameful for yuorself would not help. If someone lets their habits continue and not notice it before it turns into a big problem, then it would be too late, I believe that they should pass on the ideas through doctors so that the children would not be offended and will also understand why it is necessary to take good care of themselves.

Obesity is rapidly becoming a huge problem all over the United States. Many more fast food restaurants have been opening up, and tempt people to come and eat there.
Many kids nowadays do not really take their health into consideration, mainly because they think that they are invincible. However, these early years in life are the most crucial becasue they help to determine if you will have diseases later on in life.
The fast food industry can't really take all the blame though, children would rather spend time on the phone, computer, or playing video games. I agree with Elizabeth Smith though, video games such as Wii Fit are trying to get more people to excercise.
As for the families of these obese kids, i am curious as to why they wouldn't take the necessary steps to try to save there kid's life. I know that some families don't have the money to put their children through intense programs, but little things like cutting back on all the junk food that is bought, or taking a 30 minute walk. The whole family could get involved and work together, and support each other.
Jared Cooper-6th period
ReplyDeleteI believe that untill they have to prove that this method works. Certain people tried many other ways like dieting, wieght loss pills, fasting diets, etc.
but none of thoose methods seem to work mostly on the fact that people cant stay commited to the diet. Some people might not change the eating life style of there children bc they are used to spoiling there kids. If the parents wont spoil the kids then they wont be obesse. Just taking a 30 to 45 minute walk is one way to keep ur child inshape. I dont think that this method will if the parent and the child arent commited to it
Iram Nandolia
ReplyDeleteI believe the leading cause of obesity today is not having the proper diet, such as eating too much fast food, or microwave dinners daily. The foods that are arranged onto our supermarket shelves have been highly processed and refined. We curently are the 2nd most obese city, and should be putting the most effort possible in helping obesity.
Along with obesity for most come self- esteem issues. Many feel inferior to others because of their weight. So I think these programs that are working to help obesity are a great way to help americans.

ReplyDeleteI think its crazy that 17% kids in America are obese, and it's good to see a plan to help obese people. I personnaly think every obese kid should do this because it could really change ther life. If my child was obese i would make him/her do the treatment because the kid is prone to having health promblems and diseases later on in life. I agree on Jared's response where they should go on a walk everyday and not that difficult. If you are obese you shouldn't miss fun things or activities because your obese and can't do them, so parents should push kids to be active.

ReplyDeleteObesity is a serious issue everywhere, most prominently in America. It is depressing to watch people who takes up 3 seats in burger king unwrapping a bunch of whoppers. Not only does it make the person socially negative, harder to get a job, more chances of medical complications, and an extra seat cost in airplanes, it will also make other people spend money and time on something that can be prevented. Genetics play a part in this too, but other countries also have genetically fat people. So why is America fatter than all those other countries? American's main foods(burgers, Pizza, Fries) is much more unhealthy than other countries.
I believe what the government is trying to do is admirable, but i also agree with Josh Ortiz about it being more of a political move. For example, they could spend the money on the cause its self instead of the effect. Make the food healthier instead of making the people lose weight. Think about it, the none obese people will be eating out of the same numerous restaurants and many products that made the obese people obese in the first place. By changing the food we eat, we would cut of the main cause to obesity.

Obesity in America is a big problem that has been going on for quite some time and it really is unfortunate that one of the greatest country in the world is having this certain type of problem. In my opinion I'm glad that companies are taking little steps to try and decrease obesity by making excercise products that may seem more enjoyable to those who don't have the motivation to lose weight. I think that the government and these companies are doing good but we should do more as a country, for example companies should sponser people who are losing weight and give rewards to act as motivation. But I think that people who are over weight shouldn't need motivation to lose weight because it is their own body and being over weight can hurt them, so people should love their body and be healthy.Kudos to the government for doing this but their will always be those people who will not do this, as Joshua Ortiz said, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Alexandria that the problem of obesity really lies in the way a person lives and how they think. Some people that are obese think that they can’t change the way they are because of genes. That is not true. They can still try to stay healthy and in shape. It may be harder than what other people go through but it is worth it. I think that some of the government plans for controlling obesity are too costly and won’t really help the person in the long run with not becoming obese again. People have to choose for themselves on whether they want to become healthier or not.
I think they should not really be focusing on the kids only. i Think first they should look toward the home life first and see how the parents are. Because i really do not no any parents who want to watch there kid get obese. But this program sounds like a solid plan because kids will realize how much better they are off being in the category over weight then obese , i think they will notice the difference from being stared at in public to barley anyone noticing the weight. It's not the parents or the kids fault some times though it think it is also our standard of living. Living in the Us you will find many people have a very high standard of living we of all countries have one of the highest standards and therefore expect more. But putting kids on a healthier diet and keeping them active is or should be our main goal. Lets tackle the obesity problem first then move forward to over weight.

ReplyDeleteObesity is something a person earns by heredity, not exercising, and eating non healthy food. Most of the people don't try to make a difference in their obesed bodies. The reasons are because it can be unaffordable to most of the citizens. United States is one of the countries with the most obesed people. If people tried to find ways to cure obesity, they can each be a different person to the community. Money doesn't really play a big role in the term obesity. People can go out and exercise everday. They can be on diet, and only eat healthy food for their body. If they choose to not work hard and get a surgery, there will be problems in the future that they will have to go through. an obesed person should always try to loose weight doing the right things.
Jackie Miller-6th
ReplyDeleteThere is no denying that obesity is a problem in the U.S.A. Basically, the culprit is the individual's lifestyle. How the government thinks it can get a person to change his lifestyle in a free world seems impossible to me. If the person liked eating well and exercising, they would be doing it and not be obese. There are other health considerations that make it difficult for some people to keep from being obese, but again, if the individual really wanted to decrease their weight, they would. Obviously, it is just not that important to everyone. Throughout history in many cultures, being obese was considered a sign of wealth and status. This meant that the person had plenty of food and was not required to do any work. Bottom line, a person's weight in relation to their health status if their choice.
Children will always be a product of their parent's lifestyle choices and I don't think there is much the government can do to override their parent's influence. But, there is a way, I think, to have influence over obese adults and children. Increase their health care premiums. Smokers are charged extra fees, why not obese people, since studies show they will have more health problems than those that aren't obese? Children's coverage concerning obesity would have the same stipulation. If it costs more to cover an obese person, then they should pay for that lifestyle they choose.

ReplyDeleteOf course obesity is a major prolbem in the United States. It takes over lives, and when i say that, i mean literally, IT WILL TAKE OVER YOUR LIFE. Obesity is a life style, either chosen or not. Not everyone who is obese chose their life style. It can be inherited, or their matablism may be extremly low. So with the children and the medicine and pills they are trying to get them to take is a debated statement. Yes, obesity may not be the most appeling thing, and getting them to take a pill so they may loose the weight could be a burden off their chest. But, at the same time i do not believe that they should take the pill. My younger cousin who is 4 year old is obese. Her mother, and myself does not expect her to take the pill. She is just 4!!!! So maybe at a certain age, probably around 10+ would be apporiate. :)

It hurts the (obese) people socially, it makes it harder to get a job, and it causes medical issues. And we don't want American citizens dieing of these conditions like a heart attack. Its good to seee alot of weight-loss ads on TV, or the Newspaper, bu then its also good to see it in game shows such as "The Biggest Loser". Obesity is a huge American issue, but it can be solved. ReplyDeleteI would have to say that i think child obesity would have to lay in the parents hand. The parents are ones that allow their child to continue eating when they dont need to. I understand that some kids would have tantrums to get food but that is still under the permission of their parents. I also think that another problem with children are what the schools re serving for lunch and the quantity of the kids can buy. The vending machines at some schools do not always have healthy snacks in them, and for some that is all that they would eat for lunch. I just want to end with it is all up to the person to want to change their lifestyle for themselves.

I agree with Paul obesity begins with how a person thinks and how they live. The major problem is that once you've started living an obese life style it's hard to stop. Once you get used to something it's hard to give it up. If people really wanted to change they could just use exercise and eating healthy, unless they have a special condition. I personally think that the government programs won't help much considering they're so costly. Many people can't afford that. Also if you go to the store junk food and fattening foods are more expensive than fruits and vegetables, so it's no wonder so many people are over weight. To me it doesn't seem like many people are going to spend so much money to lose weight unless they're desperate and nothing else worked or because they have a condition causing them trouble or because they're health is in jeopardy.
Taylor Allerman Per.5
ReplyDeleteI think that even tho it doesn't seem very ethical, it is a step on the right path. Obesity is a huge problem in this country, one that is not easily solved or treated. Problems associated with obesity and over weight are the second largest causes of death in this country, right after tabaco. And like tabaco it can be dealt with, just like you can be hooked on drugs you can be hooked on food. You have that emotional feeling that you need it, tha it makes everything okay. And pretty son it becomes an emotional outlit for you pain or frustration and the more you feed it the worse it becomes. Kids shouldn't be shipped to camps to deal with being fat, there parents should instill good eating and excersize habits for them. They should be taught to make health eating choices and to stay active. I'm not saying we should rip every sweet off the shelf and throw it away, we should teach moderation and self respect.

ReplyDeleteI believe that obesity program is a bittersweet thing. It is good to try and help obese children, but then it may damage or scar them emotionally. Some people are comfortable being larger than others, especially if they have been that way for a while. They begin to find a comfort zone and most don't want to leave out of this zone. The children might feel that they are being singled out from everyone else; especially, if it is at a young age, because children tend to be egotistical and make everything about themselves, good or bad. Some people do not decide to be obese. There are many things that cause uncontrolled weight gain such as stress, depression, thyroid complications and many other underlying illnesses. The environment in which the kids live in may also be an issue depending on what the people around them cook or eat. If their parents just cook fatty foods, then they really have no choice but to eat it, especially if they are at a young age. On the other hand, if they are like some kids who come home and their parents don’t get home until late at night, there may not be any healthy food cooked, or any food at that. So they would have no choice but to eat junk food. The program is good because some children do become obese at their own hands. Some can’t control their cravings, while in some cases; the parents are too weak to stop them from eating. So this is a good and bad thing, depending on the person.

If that something is just eating healthier at home or going to have a talk with your doctor to see what can help then you should do it. Sure, some people's obesity might be a result of their genes but you can't use that as an excuse. If you really want to change yourself then you should at least try to stay healthy and in shape. Honestly, I think that the government should stop using money to help a person who isn't set on changing. Rather, they should let people choose whether they want to become healthier or not.

Obesity has been a problem in many kids life's no matter what the age is, and many kids can lose weight if they are willing to meet half way. I think that schools can help out with this problem by selling more heathly foods through out the school and encourging kids and teens to stay healthy. Though some people may suffer from diseases that can possibly make them gain weight, and if thats the problem then it ca be a little more understanding, but if kids today could be more healthy and have a good work ethic, it could also cut down the numbers of kids and adults that suffer from weight gaining diseases, by simply going on diets and more exercise. I also think that, kids should not be taking weight loss pills due to the side effects it can possibly cause.

ReplyDeleteMany people, especially in the US, are obese. While being obese isn't good, it is that person's decision how they are going to live their life. Personally, I don't want to risk heart attacks, strokes, and other problems that come with being too obese, and I love to run around outside and play. But some people prefer to sit on the couch all day and watch TV with some Lays. I understand that. I know somebody who doesn't do any physical exercise to say and doesn't exactly eat healthily. But recently, they have made an effort to lose weight because they, as you can imagine, would prefer to be average or slim over obese any day. So like I said, they started doing some exercise, but aren't getting any substantial results. My friends and I have tried telling this person that just being active isn't enough. Your eating habits also have to change. No more heavy carb meals, no fast food, no greasy stuff, etc. Try to eat more fruits and vegetables. And as far as when it is you're eating, always eat breakfast and dinner. In between, eat small nutritional meals like an apple or some celery with peanut butter in two to three hour increments. Stay away from the large dinner meals too. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work to lose weight and stop being obese, but I think that if an obese person gives what it takes, then they will begin to feel better about themselves.

ReplyDeleteI agree with the post that says that there is a problem with obesity. People with obesity am sure think that the don't have problem but the people around them think its a problem. But if the person with obesity don't care its there choose not to care and to care. And if the parents care about there child enough and have control the could do something about it to. I do think it is a problem because all the other counties call us fat and stuff because there so much obesity here. But as I said its the person u has the problem and there parents.

ReplyDeleteI think that the "obese" kids shouldn't have to go to this weightloss program. How would you feel if someone comes up to you and says "you are overweight and are required to lose that weight." It isn't fair. If the kids that are "obese" want to lose the weight they can go do it themselfs with some motivation, not force.

ReplyDeleteThis problem is a preventable problem. I think that doctors should talk and give help to those who need it. It is a lifestyle problem. You have to adjust to it like the economy. If you just sent the doctors to some retreat and tell them how to talk to people about it it would not cost very much. There is no need for politicians to interfere with health. This is the problem. The government has too much power against these things. The health department should decide.

ReplyDeleteObesity is growing problems in America, one in every 5 children are obese. What the government is trying to do is very admirable but is a hopeless cause. Most of the people who are obese are the way they are by their own choice. The government should not take it upon themselves to make kids healthy. If a person wants to be healthy it is their responsibility to take action towards it. If you are forced to do something you don’t want to do you will go against it, just like that those who don’t want to go through the hard work involved in it won’t do it? Another problem is the cost, America is already full with burdens from cost and this may be another burden that America just can’t afford. In conclusion if a person doesn’t want to be obese it is their problem not the governments.

ReplyDeleteI think that the weightloss program is a great idea but parents should not spend lots of money on expensive foods and all that stuff. Alot of parents can't afford all these treatments. So its also the little things that count like at McDonalds the little kid doesnt need to get fries they can get those apple wedges. Other small stuff can help to like go to the park everyday and playing around and that activites dont cost any money. Im not saying that the kid is going to magically loss weight by eating apples and going to the park. Im saying that doing all of that and some minor paying of money should be alright. I would hate to see and low class family pay so much to get their child to be healthy till they are poor to the penny.Overall obesty is a horrible thing must be stopped but not at once. A diet is a life goel it never kinda stops. your not going to lose 20 pounds then go buy a big mac.

ReplyDeleteI believe that taking all the obese kids and putting them through many tests to lose weight will be very hard. It will be hard for both the patient and the doctor. There are a lot of obese kids out there and finding them all and changing them to overweight will be hard. For the kid i believe that they should get the decision. Maybe they don't care about there weight maybe they don't want to go through a lot of tests. Either way i dont think the obese child should get a say in things. Maybe when they get older they decide to work off there weight.

ReplyDeleteI think it rude to get children to join a obesity program. Its nice have someone care for these children, but its rude because you're basically telling them they're too fat. i think they should talk to the parents and give the parent pointers and suggestions. then from there they should each parent talk to thier own child. this is a respectful and oranginezed way to do this such of a thing.

ReplyDeleteTrying to take 17% of the population of todays kids and get them to go through two appointments a week seems to me as impossible. I do not think that we have the amount of people in that area of expertise available to see that many kids. Also who would be able to afford it? Also, being a kid once myself I wouldn't have been able to commit to something that serious when I was younger. I believe that they should not force this idea onto obese children, but let them decide for their own self when they understand the health benefits more.

ReplyDeleteI think childhood obesity starts with the family. If you monitor your kids weight at an early age it wouldnt be a problem in the long run, because they would have good eating habits. But also sometimes kids have problems that make them eat even when their mind is telling them no. And their stomach is telling them yes. So if that is the case with your child you should go to the doctor as soon as it starts to try to taake control of it at an early age, before he or she becomes obese.

When i started reading I laughed a litte (then i felt like a bad person) but hey, it's a little humerous that this is even considered news. I'm amazed that our country has come to this, that we have to create programs to help the obese loose weight. Really, is our country that obsessed with food? Are we that fat? It's kind of sad and I mean what a better way to draw attention to the issue at hand then to get screened for "intensive obesity behavior treatment"? I dont think its such a bad idea. Yes i understand that not every overweight person is that way due to lack a proper diet and exersise but there are children who are and why not hel them? Seeing that heart disease is the #1 killer in the United States and is has something to do with obesity I think it's a great idea to try and course correct an issue before it grows into a bigger one.

ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of factors that contribute to obesity, for instance, heredity, technology, or different lifestyles. They just need to think of another way to solve the problem without costing us too much or hurting people’s feelings. I think it is a good idea to be screen for obesity, and then it is up to us to take actions against it. Since some people might not want to face the fact that they are actually obese until truth reveals.

Obesity is and always has been a major issue in our society. The lifestyle one chooses to take plays a very important vital role in this situation. One can either maintain and sustain a healthy diet and endure a healthy lifestyle or they could choose the unhealthy lifestyle which would impact their livese in a variety of ways. Once one enters obesity, it is very difficult to leave that lifestyle.

I believe that there are pros and cons to this type of situation. It would be good to have people be healthier and fit, but you cannot force someone to change their lifestyle that drasticaly. Although obesity can lead to harmful consequences such as diabetes, the government should not be in charge of something that personal. If the doctor told that to someone, then it would be a completely different story. But asking a person to change their life, is a big step.

Obesity is, as mentioned by many before, an extremely serious problem, particularly in the United States. The average life expectancy is decreasing in the U.S., and one of the causes for this decline is obesity. I feel that it is important to keep these children healthy, even if it means going to a government mandated program. Being told, "You're overweight, but we can fix that," is better than being told, "You're overweight, so we're going to let you continue on the trend that you're following."
Unfortunately, in recent times more individuals are blaming their genes on obesity, pointing to their parents as examples, when this is easily explainable by pointing out that a child is likely to imitate their parents' lifestyle. In any case, even genetically ingrained obesity can be treated with a lifestyle change, but such a change is one many are unwilling to make.

ReplyDeleteYes, we live in a very obese country, and I'm glad that they are doing something about it, but, my problem is, this is something that could have been easily solved at home. As many people have said, one in five children are obese, but, how many, do you think, would no longer be that way had they had better parents as role models. Starting at a young age, we start mimicking our parents, what they do, what they say, if they end up being obese, the chances are fairly high the child will too. Yes, this medical mumbo jumbo sounds great, but it's not really solving anything. Most people will see it as, a short term solution, after they are done with it, there's a very high chance they will go back to being the way they were. Also, I really wanted to know who else extremely hates the polka-dots in the background. I, myself find them quite aggravating.
Ethan, I'm sorry you hate the polka dots...I thought it gave the blog a little personality! If it is really that aggrevating to people, I will do my best to change it when I get a chance. You know I aim to please my wonderful students :)

ReplyDeleteI acknowledge we live in an overly obese country, but I don't think its their place to try to treat it. Not all obese people eat excessively, some is just genetics. I think there are more serious problems to worry about. Also I think that obesity is something that should be controlled at an early age not something someone cant all of a sudden just try to intervene on. It seems to me as these people have good intentions but its just not going to work in my opinion.

ReplyDeleteOver weight and obese children are a problem but its more of a personal problem to me. Its not just the children I think the parents should take charge and monitor what their children eat. Also being aware of the issue is very good we cannot ignore it or see pass it. Once we find a problem we should fix it right? But we cannot be respond harshly about the situation, because there is an internal reason to the eating these children are doing. Personally, I can not imagine what it would be like to be obese and from what I see about over weight people now it is not easy at all. I don’t think people should react like they want because there are emotions involved in this. Obesity is getting worst but at the same time no one is really going out of their way to help people so before we judge maybe we should see what its like to be them because I’m sure it is not easy at all.

ReplyDeleteI think that there are many obese children in our society and that we should try and take some part in helping with this. I agree with Ethan that parents should be and are a huge role model for their kids. In most families you see that if the parents are overweight or obese that their kids are also. This could be from eating too much or it could be how their metabolism is. I saw a little girl who was maybe three in the mall and she was obese. This could not be her fault at this age because she has no choice in choosing what she eats. I think that it is a good idea to help those children lose weight. There are also T.V. shows that encourage those who are obese such as "The Bigest Loser". This show can help those who feel like they don't have a chance at losing any weight.

ReplyDeleteI agree about 80 percent with Ethan. Parents are the role models for their children, and children tend to do what their parents do, such as eating habits, exercise and such. But, it is also the child's decision what to do. Children are given enough information in school about taking care of themselves to make an informed decision about a good lifestyle. While parents are in fact the role models, kids could go either way in following their bad habits. Either they do what their parents do, or they hate their parents' bad habits and want to change that in themselves. But what one must really consider is if they want to loose wait to be healthy, or to look slimmer. Looks do not matter, only one's health does. So if these treatments make the children eat right, and excercise to be HEALTHY, and not just diet way too much and become extra-unhealthy.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Alexis Ward in saying that the studies should be focused on how to prevent obesity in the future generation. If "aren't willing to make the necessary lifestyle changes ", there`s really no point in trying to continue with special attention to the obese kids who are currently obese. However, I do, in some ways, think that they should still treat those kids with special attention just not to the extent that the doctors only help those that are currently suffering from obesity.
The United States is filled with fast food restaurants at every corner. This only allows more and more people to become a victim of obesity. Being obese shortens the lives of people. I do believe that doctors do need to figure out a cure or a way to prevent this risk.

Obesity is one of the main problems in high standard countries like America today. I don’t believe that it is a genetic disorder because you can prevent it by eating right and exercising enough. Being obese doesn’t only hurt a person physically but also mentally and emotionally. It must be difficult for kids to be made fun of all the time for being obese. But as time goes on kids are not the only ones who grow to be obese..many adults are as well. What the government is doing is very thoughtful but I’m not sure if its going to work or not. The best way to prevent obesity is to start eating right and exercising daily in an early age..because once you are obese its very hard to turn back. And I don't think theres anything wrong with the polka dots..their cute (:

I personally think that obesity and overweight people in the US is a sad thing. Some people aren't able to prevent it because of their inherited traits, but that doesn't mean they can try and change it for the better. If your parents are always eating and pigging out you have the choice, in some cases, to help change that. Even the simplist things like this "camp" can help so many young people our age get healthy and enjoy life again. But at the same time this is their choice and the kids have to be dedicated to change, as well as the family. It's a very hard subject to talk about because so many of the American people are eating out or having fast food all the time and I just think its so sad to look at the number of kids who have been influenced to the extent of obesity. And they need help outside of their home somethimes.

ReplyDeleteObesity has always been a problem for our society in the past and still today. People have to make important choices to choose which life style they want. There are many choices like for example eating delicious junk food, of healthy food it’s your choice. You have to be willing to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent your self to have obesity. If you choose to have the unhealthy lifestyle it is very difficult to get out of that life style.

ReplyDeleteI personally believe that the government should have no right in saying how people should be forced to loose weight. I mean no one is perfect and sure having the world consume of healthy and in shape people would be nice, but being able to keep up a healthy diet, or attending sessions with a doctor could be very difficult for some people. We don’t know what’s going on in their life, for example they could have just lost a wife, best friend, mom ect, And some people handle depression in ways such as eating. Also money could be a problem for some people. I think that people should have their own right to control their weight, its their body.

ReplyDeleteI believe obesity is a problem that will never be able to be overcome completely. People will always make the wrong choices and it is the job of the doctors and medical people, to put the information out there that needs to be heard and educate the people. Obviously, the program cannot be forced on to people but they can enforce education which would in turn hell people why they should listen to the program and follow it. After all these medical people do live for the people and are looking out for their best interest and as the people, we should be taking advantage of these wonderful programs that they have put out there and at least give them a try. Obesity can kill, but a doctor can save. Take the side of a doctor and live a healthy life all the way.

ReplyDeleteObesity is a real big problem in America. I think we should do something about kids with obesity problems at an early stage so that they can know how important their health is. We can also try to fix obesity by teaching kids about obesity and how to make healthy choices.
But its not just the people in America, its mainly all the fast food America has to offer. Its true one out of five american kids are obese, and that america is the fattest country in the world. We should try to fix this and overcome our fatty eating habits, and we can only do this by doing everything we can as a nation to help this obesity problem.

ReplyDeleteI believe that fighting childhood obesity is an important issue. In America, the number of obese children has stayed at a steady number since 2005.
I believe these programs aren't a good idea. Even though it has good results it can cost the family a lot of money. The progam would also treat the childrens obesity like a life threatening disease that needed to be fixed quickly.
A more gradual low cost program would be a better move in treating obesity. I believe that parents should play a larger role in their kids lives, so that when the children begin to lose weight they won't go back to bad eating habits.

A few extra pounds do not obviously suggest obesity. A child might be like that because of various reasons. The government should not impede on such personal things. Generally, a child is not considered obese until the weight is atleast 10% higher than what is reccomemded. Maybe the kid is already trying hard to loose weight and if the government tells them that they need to take drugs because obviously they're not trying hard enough, i personally would be very disturbed. The causes of obesity include genetic, biological, behavioral and cultural factors. Obese children need medical evaluation from a family physician rather than the government. The government really have no right to get into this things. If the child or the child's parents think the child is obese, the government should make sure they know where to seek help from. My only suggestion is that no one should be compelled or forced to do this, rather, they should do it on their own, since it's a very personal patter and many might be affected negatively.

ReplyDeleteSome people consider obesity when they are 200 pounds or once they can no longer fit in their pants. Obesity is a big thing in the united states because physical fitness is not advertised enough. Children and adults begin to get obese because of problems at home or at school or work. Obesity can also be caused from heredity. It is not always the fault of the person eating just the things that have been passed down to them. They can find another way before they also become obese. The government can not just give a drug because it may not help all and that is what doctors are there for to help the obese loose the weight needed.

ReplyDeleteObesity causes all sorts of health risks and problems that can end up costing a ton of money to treat. Although these weight loss plants may be quite expensive, in the long run people may actually be saving themselves money by not having to have to treat something terrible like diabetes. Even if money wasn't an object, nobody wants to live with something like diabetes and the mental, physical, emotional stress is probably not worth having to live with just because you are too lazy to go to someplace once a week. The 17% may be daunting, but slowly if people take small steps the number will go lower and lower, 5% is much smaller problem than 17% and although it may take a while, if people stay on track, results will come.

ReplyDeleteMany different factors can determine when someone finally realizes its time to diet. Obesity is exremely unhealthy and can cause a lot earlier death than planned. This disorder can take over your life. It will effect you everyday until you decide you want to change it. Kids being overweight is much worse in my opinion. Your still growing and developing, your childhood should try to be as healthy as possible. Kids with obesity problems can turn into adults with much worse problems if nothing is done now. I believe going for treatment to help kids lead a healthier lifestyle is perfectly okay. It cant hurt, all it can do is help. If kids take the problem away when their young, their lives will be much easierfor themselves, and their future family to come.
I thik that obesity starts when you ar eyonger. You have to eat healthy food and exersise for a hour a day. Parents should have control of there kids and should make them eat right and exersise. Thats not the case sometimes cause maybe you might be diagnose with a eating disorder. And if you did you should go see a doctor as soon as possible.

ReplyDeleteA kid shouldn't have to go through a intensive behavior treatment! Think about it, that would be devastating to a kid! They would get made fun of a ton from other kids, and this just highlights the difference between an obese and a normal weight child. In reality, there is no difference between a child who is overweight, or one who is underweight. We're all the same! I think that this is another program that will make the government pay billions of dollars they don't have. I would understand this action if the majority of people are like the people in Wall-e. But only 17% are obese, so there is no need. I say we keep it like it is because if you want help you can get it a lot cheaper- it's called a gym, even a work-out instructor/trainer. These are professionally trained people who keep tabs on your diet and help you exercise. And if you especially want to, you can go to a psychiatrist. This is basically what they're offering with a fancier name and a lot more money attached. I say that we keep on doing what we're doing, and we'll be fine, especially with all the rules school is putting on food. (I'm really sad the vending machines left!!!!:(
