Disputed Isle in Bay of Bengal Disappears into Sea

Disputed isle in Bay of Bengal disappears into sea

By NIRMALA GEORGE, Associated Press Writer Nirmala George, Associated Press Writer – Wed Mar 24, 9:29 am ET

NEW DELHI – For nearly 30 years, India and Bangladesh have argued over control of a tiny rock island in the Bay of Bengal. Now rising sea levels have resolved the dispute for them: the island's gone.

New Moore Island in the Sunderbans has been completely submerged, said oceanographer Sugata Hazra, a professor at Jadavpur University in Calcutta. Its disappearance has been confirmed by satellite imagery and sea patrols, he said.

"What these two countries could not achieve from years of talking, has been resolved by global warming," said Hazra.

Scientists at the School of Oceanographic Studies at the university have noted an alarming increase in the rate at which sea levels have risen over the past decade in the Bay of Bengal.

Until 2000, the sea levels rose about 3 millimeters (0.12 inches) a year, but over the last decade they have been rising about 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) annually, he said.

Another nearby island, Lohachara, was submerged in 1996, forcing its inhabitants to move to the mainland, while almost half the land of Ghoramara island was underwater, he said. At least 10 other islands in the area were at risk as well, Hazra said.

"We will have ever larger numbers of people displaced from the Sunderbans as more island areas come under water," he said.

Bangladesh, a low-lying delta nation of 150 million people, is one of the countries worst-affected by global warming. Officials estimate 18 percent of Bangladesh's coastal area will be underwater and 20 million people will be displaced if sea levels rise 1 meter (3.3 feet) by 2050 as projected by some climate models.

India and Bangladesh both claimed the empty New Moore Island, which is about 3.5 kilometers (2 miles) long and 3 kilometers (1.5 miles) wide. Bangladesh referred to the island as South Talpatti.

There were no permanent structures on New Moore, but India sent some paramilitary soldiers to its rocky shores in 1981 to hoist its national flag.

The demarcation of the maritime boundary — and who controls the remaining islands — remains an open issue between the two South Asian neighbors, despite the disappearance of New Moore, said an official in India's foreign ministry, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on international disputes.

Bangladesh officials were not available for comment Wednesday.

In particular, what do you think about the global warming part of this? Do you think this has anything to do with it as it is stated in the article? Make sure you support your opinions!

This article shows on how global warming is affecting the people in that area today. It raises awareness of the things global warming can do and the impact it has on the people. Many people were driven from their homes because of the change of sea level from the oceans because of the global warming. I think that global warming has a very big impact on the fact that the island had disappeared because of the increasing sea levels. This shows on how much it can to an island in this amount of time. This article brings new questions into thought-could this happen to one of the main continents, how will this affect the population that was inhabiting that land, and how are the remaining populations going to cope with the amount of people in one area with very little resources? So much questions come into question when it changes a person's life. Bangledesh is mentioned that there are twenty million people that are going to be displaced by the year 2050 from the rising sea levels, and the twenty million displaced are going to have to move to another location. This becomes very difficult when starting a new life in a new place as well as trying to fit so much people in a small area, plus adding very little resources-depending on where they choose to live. This is just one of the many that may be affected by the global warming affects.

I think that the global warming is a part of this because it can cause many different types of disasters in the Island."What these two countries could not achieve from years of talking, has been resolved by global warming," said Hazra. The countries are not thinking or acting like mature adults who can come to a compromise. i think very dangerous for people who living in Bangladesh at the moment or in the future. "Officials estimate 18 percent of Bangladesh's coastal area will be underwater and 20 million people will be displaced if sea levels rise 1 meter (3.3 feet) by 2050 as projected by some climate models."(George 1).It will be very dangerous for them because they are risking their own lives by living in the coastal region in Bangladesh.

  4. I think that global warming is a topic of rising concern, but i dont think that it is as much of a problem as some scientists are making it seem. Yes, one meter addition to sea level will travel a long ways inward, but there is plenty of land left for people to live. As for the islanders, one meter is huge! Some islands may only reach 10 meters in altitude and having a one meter rise is a harsh effect for the people on the islands. I think that if problems do start to occur that people will get the problem taken care of and all will be well again.

I think that it is ironic how an issue was under debate as far as how people would go about handling it and then their issue at hand was solved by another current issue in our daily lives. If other islands had previously been submerged, then I am confused as to why oceanographers spent so much time attempting to find a resolution to the threat. They had seen other islands and families washed away, so why couldn't they prepare ahead of time to make some effort of saving the land.

The article is very interesting in how it talks about a dispute that wasn’t able to be solved peacefully by two countries was solved by nature. I think this is a great way to end a dispute because even though it may lead to people being displaced, it doesn’t result to thousands of dollars being used towards war.

The article claimed that the island went underwater due to global warming and this is true because according to the IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, an increase in global temperatures will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern of precipitation. Sea levels in the Arctic could influence the oceans all around the world because warming is expected to be the strongest in the Arctic which would be associated with the continuation of glaciers retreating, permafrost and sea ice melting and the and the magnitude to which it melts would imply that it would add “water” to the Arctic ocean which would then indirectly affect oceans all around the world. Scientists believe that temperatures all over the world will gradually start to increase and because they will start to increase, the humidity in the air would then increase. The implications that this would have would be that there would be more humidity in the air which would lead to more evaporation, and thus condensation, meaning more rainfall and the rising of sea levels.

Global Warming as a concept and an idea is very debatable. All of these ideas are based of tested theories obviously but are disputed on a daily base because of their subjectivity. Some believe that the effects that are mentioned above are caused by human interaction, by nature itself, and some believe that they don’t occur at all.

What are your views in terms of Global Warming; do you believe that it is caused by humans, happens by nature, or rather doesn’t happen at all? Explain.

Since the Indian Ocean is the warmest ocean in the world, it is likely that sea levels will continue to rise, particularly near that point. Global Warming, even if some do not believe the evidence put forth to prove it, should e taken seriusly no matter one's belief. The climate is changing; we have proof of that. Precautionary measures could have been taken to prevent such steep climate changes, but it is almost too late for those. I'm not sure that there is much that America can do now concerning climate change. If in 2050 the sea rises to one foot, the only thing we can do now is to lower carbon emissions, etc.

Some people believe in global warming and others don't. Some scientists say that they have data that proves and shows that global warming is occurring and getting worse while other scientists argue back that it is not happening because some of their data is false or exaggerated. I constantly hear teachers talk about how global warming is happening but the reason why is still debated. The government says that it is humans fault and so because of that they want to tax us for the carbon dioxide that we give off. Some scientists argue that it is just the normal cycle of nature that there are increases and decreases over the years in global temperature. I think that global warming is not happening, but I have not personally seen data charts that prove that global warming is happening.
I think that it is interesting that the sea level is rising by 0.2 inches a year. The article states, "20 million people will be displaced if sea levels rise 1 meter (3.3 feet) by 2050 as projected by some climate models". I think that by 2050 people will have figured out how to help those 20 million people in Bangladesh not be displaced using the advancing technology whether global warming is causing it or not.

This situation is so ludicrous because the disputes among us are solved by nature! One thing that came to mind was "what if" one of the countries did win over the island, then what? their efforts to seize the island would have gone to waist seeing that it is now submerged in water.Maybe instead of fighting on who should be the rightful owner of the island, they should maybe be more concentrated on global warming, joined by the rest of the world who is absorbed by their pleasurable "needs". In my opinion this whole global warming situation IS mostly caused by humans, sure there are times on this ever changing planet where the temperatures rise and fall on their own, but this time our actions are the cause.

I believe that the island sinking was to to global warming, but the amount of greenhouse gases we produce as part of the world is insignificant compared to the big picture. Earth has had periods of hot and cold in rotation. The dinosaurs hot, the ice age cold, and now hot again. I believe that global warming is occurring and it will cause many problems, but termites and livestock give off methane as multiple other sources of greenhouse gases are not related to human activities. Everyone is afraid of the Earth being destroyed by humans, but it's been around two billion years, humans about 100,000 thousand.

Global warming should be treated more seriously than just an island disappearing and there are no more disputes over it. India and Bangladesh should realize that rising sea levels is a problem for the islands and low lying lands that they own. global warming melts glaciers which contribute to the amount of water is added to the oceans; thus submerging islands. To answer Milan Doshi's question I believe that global warming is caused by both humans and nature. Anthropogenic activity causes greenhouse gases to rise up to the atmosphere and retains heat. Now for the nature part. Every 100,000 years or so there is an ice age. Oceans and temperatures rise before the ice ages begin. That's what i think.

Global warming is at its highest now and we can see that because through the time that these two countries, India and Bangladesh have been fighting over this tiny island, global warming did its thing and took it away. This shows that global warming can do anything, and we as humans need to step up our game and stop it. Officials say that around 20 million people will be displaced if the sea levels rise by 2050. These numbers are very high and if we don’t do anything about it, its only going to get worse. Instead of fighting all the time about whose island is whose, they should be discussing what the country as a whole can do to help stop global warming. To answer Milans question, I believe that global warming is mainly cause by humans, but also some of it has to do with nature, but mostly humans.

This is amazing and really opens our eyes to Global Warming. Is it possible or not? We obviously see that something going on. Whether it's Global Warming or something else. I remember a movie we watched in Geography, and some other people were also loosing their land to rising sea level. Slowly but surely the older people on the island saw the change in their land all possibly because of people on the other side of the world. To us, our land dissapearing doesn't seem logical, but to them they see it in front of there eyes. We couldn't even imagine that happening in Texas. It like not even imaginable.

This article gives a great example of the effects of global warming on our planet Earth. It really gives us a look at the big picture of what matters most rather than petty disputes like who owns what. Also, this article should affect us who live in Houston because of how close we live to the coast. If sea levels were to rise then we'd be in as much trouble as those on the Lohachara island. Since we are well aware of the effects of global warming it would probably be best to invest some time into the causes of it. Yes we've begun to solve the problems of the emissions of CO2 from our cars but what about the natural CO2 that is given off. There is really no way to stop that and that is the reason many people have disputes over the topic of global warming. It's a matter of perspective, but in reality either way you look at it, there is a problem that we must solve and I am sure that we are close to the solution.

In this article, due to global warming, an island that has been disputed over by India and Bangladesh was recently submerged. I honestly am not quite surprised due to the fact that global warming has been causing sea levels to rise across the globe. Global warming is a continuing natural event greatest influenced by us, and, at the moment, there is nothing we can do to stop it. The article states that sea levels were rising 3 millimeters a year until 2000, during which it began rising 5 millimeters a year, a small amount, but these small units of increase obviously added up as the island was submerged, another island in the area, Lohachara was submerged in 1996, during which the sea level rose at 3 millimeters a year. This article shows that although global warming occurs at such small increments, it's results can be massive, even beyond our own understanding.

  16. This article shows us that global warming is out there. What I want to know is, is it a good thing that this happen or a bad thing. If this would have never happened then India and Bangladesh would have kept fighting over this small island. Then again even though global warming wiped out this island there are still the other islands. I think they should stop fighting and talk, it would make no sense to fight over the other islands because we know those islands are going end up like the other one, submerged under water. Global warming is out there, you don’t need to believe it but it’s out there. We should take care of earth or those islands won’t be the only thing wiped out.

Because there have been no major direct impact from global warming on the U.S., this issue is usually left alone aside from politics. Most Americans recognize and realize the effect of global warming, yet because nothing is affecting them personally, they do nothing about it. Results can be seen though, through the bizarre weather patterns and the rise in the sea level. Because we live inland, this rise cannot be fully seen, yet ones who live on islands, like New Moore Island and others who visits the oceans everyday see the difference as the tide is rising higher everyday. Personally, I think too much has already been done for us to reverse this catastrophe, but I think we can still attempt to slow it down.

People say we need to go green or the world's going to end. I think that's ridiculous. Yeah maybe we can all cut back a little but I think that most off this stuff would happen anyways. The earth naturally heats and cools with or with out us. What explains the ice age or when the ice age ended? We weren't around then. We weren't driving cars, running factories, or using hairspray. I think the ocean rising is just what was going to happen with or without us and that we shouldn't freak out about. Maybe we can do some simple things like energy efficent light bulbs and reusable bags but I think nature is just taking it's course but we'll all be fine in the end.

The small, low-lying islands are a warning to the low-lying nations. A 5-millimeter increase may not seem like much, but when one considers that a few inches of extra ocean means a few feet of land, it's not hard to see why Climatologists take global warming very seriously. Procrastinating efforts to slow such climate change is completely detrimental to every coastal nation on Earth. If those who think global warming is hogwash would do a modicum of research, they would find that their own assessments are biased and completely unfounded. These same people even point to solar activity as the entire cause of climate change, stating that Mars, the Jupiter system, and even Pluto are simultaneously warming. Mars is actually cooling due to recent sandstorms, Jupiter is staying the same and if Pluto were even changing enough to be measurable by current instruments, everyone on Earth would be dead. The truth is that the current temperature trend is mostly due to Anthropological sources.

However, I do not believe that rising sea levels are entirely to blame. Even a homeostatic ocean washes away several centimeters of land a year. The loss of New Moore Island was probably the result of multiple effects.

People need to give global warming a rest. While pollution is a serious issue there are natural reasons for the earth's climate to shift. The continental plates, ocean currents, and air currents are constantly shifting--this means that weather is changing dramatically as a result. Relatively small events can have drastic effects, much like to formation of Panama when the continents shifted into their present day locations. It completely changed the ocean currents and coastal climates.
Not that I'm saying people shouldn't do their best to reduce pollution, it's just that there is more to the change in earth's climate than what people are calling "Global Warming".

Global warming's negative effects on the world are clearly expressed in this article. The displacement of millions of people caused by rising water levels is an extremely concerning issue.
Although the past year's winter demonstrated abnormal weather (snowing) when compared to other years, it does not mean that global warming is halting. The period of cold temperatures marks a slight drop when in fact the general global climate is increasing.
The argument between India and Bangladesh is hard to comprehend. Personally, I believe their motives are political. Their struggle for the island is in reality a competition to see who is more powerful, for to them, the island is worthless.
One example mentioned by the article was of "Bangladesh, a low-lying delta nation of 150 million people, one of the countries worst-affected by global warming. Officials estimate 18 percent of Bangladesh's coastal area will be underwater and 20 million people will be displaced if sea levels rise 1 meter (3.3 feet) by 2050 as projected by some climate models." Unlike earthquakes, disasters caused by global warming are much easier to predict, for it is gradual. People need to take the issue more seriously and prevent something that people are already aware of.

This article shows that nobody has time to argue with each other or Mother Nature will have to teach us a hard lesson, in this case it was an Isle in the Bay of Bengal dissappearing in the sea. Insted of arguing over a piece of land we should focus more on how to protect it, but now since New Moore Island is gone we have to try even harder to try to stop or slow down global warming.

Given that the article is discussing the seeping of the Bay of Bengal into the Indian Ocean, this is a really serious matter. Many people turn their heads the other way whenever Global Warming is being spoken of. Many don't even believe in the concept of Global Warming, I think that there should be more knowledge of the idea of an actually Global warming. To comment on what Grace said, that is true but tthe world is always in constant transition. That may have happened back in that instance, but you also have to consider the fact that it has been a while since that took place. More more pollution and other "trash" has been emitted into our atmosphere and the adaptations that were of our earth may not exist anymore. Global warming precautions need to be taken whether or not one believes in the idea of it. It should be ones' pride that urges them to keep our earth beautiful, not the threat of a drowning world.

Global Warming may cause several disasters throughtout India, particulary the island itself, if not handled immediately. The argument between India and Bangladesh is becoming largely immature in a sense that the two countries have not come across an agreement or a compromise for that matter, but instead they continue to fight over islands until they finally have a hold of them. India and Bangladesh are focusing too much on the argument itself rather than the bigger picture, global warming. Instead of disputing over who gets the island, they should be more concerned about the effects of global warming on their country. They should come to a decision in order to help decrease the probability of the disasters and destruction caused by global warming. They need to come to realize that it could cost lives and homes and the environment itself. To do our part in society, we must do our part in society in order to slow it down.

I believe that the rising of the water level in that region is due to global warming because global warming is causing many different changes in the world and its weather. Global warming and the amount of gases that are being released by us has caused the climate over the years to increase. Global warming could probably cause many more natural interferences such as the rise in the water level of that region. So yes, I believe it is caused by global warming.

You know, global warming is a much disputed topic, and I do think that we as humans have a part in it- a very marginal part. The Jurassic Age (before humans were there) is always portrayed as tropical. It was always hot and sunny during that time period. But, in the Ice Age, all you could see is snow all around. How is this possible? It's something called the Milankovitch cycle! It's a name for a cycle that the earth goes through. It simply says that because the earth is so sloppy in its rotation and orbit, the earth gets hotter at some times and cooler at other times.
I'm not sure if I buy into all the global warming scandal, especially because humans have only a little amount of recorded history. Most of what we have doesn't include weather patterns, so we really don't know if what's happening right now is normal or not. I do think that global warming is real- our globe is warming! But I'm extremely hesitant to say that we as humans have more than a marginal part in this theory.
And to prove I read the article, why does one tiny island matter? Are they just fighting to fight, or are these islands a strategic military point? Is it an act of "disobedience" to the bigger country? Or is the fight over more land? If it's a fight over more land, maybe India should give it up, because it already has a lot more land than Bangladesh. Of course, I speak out of total ignorance on these political debates. I really don't see each country's motive, so I can't say anything, but out of what I read, it sounds ridiculous.

How idiotic is that?! Instead of looking at what's going on in the world, and most likely not noticing the rising water levels, these countries have been going back and forth over an island. And now, they are probably not even concerned about the people who have been displaced and lost thier homes due to this natural disaster; the countires have probabaly brushed it off and moved onto another dispute. Even though this only happened to a small island, what if the sea levels continue to rise? Eventually, disasters like this will begin to hit closer to home, if we dont begin to take some type of action.

If global warming is indeed something anthropogenic, then it has some benefits, in terms of settling some border disputes. But if something is such that it can be so easily swallowed into the sea, then perhaps these nation-states don't have any business exerting control over its affairs. It should be up to its inhabitants what they want to do and where they want to go.
The changing sea levels are always making interesting things happen - new things pop up, and some things disappear.

Global warming has never been taken all too seriously due to all the scientific studies that claim it not be such a big deal. Even though we hear about it all the time on TV, newspaper, and repeatedly at school we simply don’t care and usually do not take precautions. But now something quite important and serious has occurred in the Bay of Bengal and it’s claimed to be an effect of global warming. An island going under water can be quite terrifying to many. It’s difficult to imagine how such a heavy rock can drown completely beneath the water’s surface. Global warming truly showed us what it can cause. Just thinking if large numbers of people lived there they would have all been gone. Ideas like that immediately run through one’s mind considering that there are several islands like such on this earth that do contain large amount of people in their population. Surely, as stated in the article, scientists from all over the world have already experimented and have made a prediction to when such events might happen any place else in the planet. But it can never be certain. All sorts of strange catastrophes are occurring all over the world and its becoming a large issue. Global warming should be taken more into consideration due to what it can cause.

This article shows that global warming is a serious threat to society today. In America, we do not experience the impacts of global warming as much as other parts of the world. On the other side of the world, however, whole islands (whole communities of people) are being submerged by rising ocean levels due to the warming of the earth. This article also shows a bit of irony. While countries are stupidly arguing over who gets what land, the land is disappearing. Perhaps if countries stopped fighting and arguing with each other, they could work together to help slow down or even prevent global warming, saving homes and lives of many people.

Whether global warming have anything to do with the island's disappearance or not, I found the article interesting in how both Bangladesh and India's issues were solved by what is thought to be destroying the earth. Personally, I do not have enough scientific proof and presentation of said issue for me to believe global warming as a real threat to the earth, nor do I have enough evidence to believe why the earth is warming up if not by Global warming.

What might be a pretty serious issue that could related to global warming though, is the displacement of people due to the global rise of sea levels. It could potentially put even more pressure on the habitable land we already have. This could prove to be a serious issue because the earth's population is said to be doubled within the next 50 years. Region already with a heavy population density will grow even more dense. Sanitary and food issues will arise, possibly stunting efforts to reduce global pollution output.

HA! That's funny...... It's mother earth's way of saying, "If you're gonna fight over it then neither of you can have it at all." and, "wow since you guys are hurting me I'm gonna take something away from you that I know you are fighting over... so there!" WOOHOO! Go Mother Earth!

I think it is terrible that these people lost their homes to global warming. How would you feel if all of a sudden one year you have to move away because water was rising to high for you to live in your house. These people are now homeless, but it is different then the homeless people we have here in Houston. I say this because our homeless people had their homes taken up by the bank, and the island people had their homes taken up because of global warming. Global warming is an effect from the people all over the world. So citezens of the world took away these peoples homes. That is just sad, we should work harder to prevent things like this from happening in the near future.
On an upside to all of this, the two countries no longer have to fight over who owns the island.

This article is describing the effect of global warming on our planet. It has caused an island in the Bay of Bengal to disappear. As I was reading, I thought to myself, “Well, what if the water level continued to rise? What is going to happen to Earth?” I think that is a very important question to ponder. If the water level continues to rise because of global warming, there will be less and less amounts of land that can be inhabited by man. People lived on the island that was consumed by the sea, will more islands be consumed? What about cities or states or countries? Will the trend continue? I know this may be to an extent and I may have gotten carried away, but it was something I was thinking about.

This incident goes to show the true power of Mother Nature. I think its dumb for these countries to be arguing while a major catastrophe is expected to happen. I do believe that this is a result of Global Warming. This incident should go further and prove to people that Global Warming does exist and its a major factor in our future.

  46. Eriel Yeldell 6th-I thought that it was pretty ironic how they disputed over te island and now it's gone. Now, these everybody needs to focus on global warming because it's not just affecting Asia but other continents as well.Because this is increasing sea levels and displacing a vast amount of people which is going to effect everyone.

i believe that by 2050 bangladesh will probably be ubder water because it is affected most by global warming. I also think if global warming continues to be a factor in the world, then most of South East Asia will be under water. I also think that global warming has a major effect on the island because in bangledash the sea level is continues to rise 1 meter per year. I believe it does because global warming is kinda melting the island which cause see level rise

According to this report, at least two islands have been submerged due to rising sea levels. These rising sea levels are consequence of Global Warming. You would have to be a fool to disagree that Global Warming exists, for the main aspect of it has been proven. However, other than the fact that the Earth is indeed getting slowly warmer, it's all bull. Yes, the world is getting warmer, but, it's a natural cycle, with the world getting warmer at some points and then decreasing after hitting it's climax. Reading this article, it can be seen that the Global Warming situation is getting worse, but all this means is that it's nearing the climax and will soon start to get better. This also answers the worries posted here that everyone is voicing, "can this situation effect the continents!?". The answer to that is clearly, no. There is no way that this situation would continue on such a rate to envelope the continents. Besides, even if it did, it definitely would not be in our lifetime.

I do believe that global warming has resolve the disagreement between India and Bangladesh on which country is having control over which land. Global warming is a big part of how New Moore Island is now under sea. Because the glaciers are melting and sea level is rising, more and more island is being submerged. I do agree with what some of the University’s studies have shown, it proves that the submerging of the islands are cause by rising sea levels, rising .8 inches annually rather than .15 inches yearly. But global warming does not have an impact on whether or not the South Asian countries are able settle over the control of the land around them, like an official of India's foreign ministry had said; it is an open issue.

First of all , I want to start off by saying this whole dispute is a tad bit . . . childish , in a way. They`re arguing over tiny bits of land that has been easy taken over by nature. Rather than taking the time to argue about what island is whos. Without them even knowing, these islands would be long gone after a short period of time by the causes of global warming .

This brings me to another point. We, humans, are so distracted by the material things that we forget about what`s important . There`re many ways in which the things that we use can threaten the world, and many of us don`t even know it. for example , hair spray , pollution , and wastes can all add to the risks of global warming. We are part of the reason why nature has taken the death of whole communities, as Beth had stated. If we would all just focus more on the goods of nature maybe things wouldn`t be so bad .

This has a lot of irony in it. A global natural crisis sloves a disputes between 2 countries. When it comes to global warming i have different thoughts than most people. The scitest are looking for a solution to global warming. I don't think that is possible. In ten years if the speed of the rising of the water level nearly doubles it is not possible to stop it. This hole is too deep to get out of. In stead we should cope with it. It is time to start making tecknology to live under water. This solves many problems. Global warming wont cause the extinction of humans. The population vs landmass problem will be solved. A great man once said time is humans greatest tool yet its humans greatest enemy. It makes us work quickly yet it causes limits us. In ten decades if the water level increasing seed doubles then we all could drown. This time limit will make technology advance faster. In this way global warming could solve more problems than it makes.

I agree with Annie, although it was an extreme and our generation will not as greatly affected our children and grandchildren many generations after them will be affected more. The issue of global warming is increasing more and more despite all of the worldwide efforts to help reduce global warming. Many "children" tv stations such as Disney Channel have started organizations like "Disney Channel's Freinds for Change" to inform kids and get them involved and helping to try and save our planet. However, due to the outrageous weather patterns that we have been experiencing for the past couple of months shows that our efforts have yet to be recognized.

Global warming is a huge crisis that is slowly destroying earth and submerging it under water. This incident of the coast of India is just one of the few problems that have risen over the past years. We will soon have to face the problem as adults, so we have to start acting now. We are the main cause of this dilemma, when we burn fuel and waste energy we thicken the atmosphere and this traps the heat. This in turn melts the ice caps causing higher water temperature. This is only one of the few problems caused by global warming. Entire species disappear by the year, and there have been more drastic environmental changes such as more frequent hurricanes and stronger thunderstorms. But there is still hope WE can change it, if we reduce the amount of fossil fuel that are burned and change how we use energy we can drastically slow down global warming of not completely change it . It is up to us.

I don't understand why the very topic of global warming is still being disputed even though we can clearly see the affects that are caused by it. Islands are SINKING! and to top it all off there is no one else to blame except ourselves. Humans in general have to step back and look at the bigger picture instead of arguing over small islands which are in the end still going to be submerged if nothing is done to fix the damage we have caused. I find it hard to believe that global warming is causing such drastic events to occur

I Anders Beato, this is just me I think that we do very little to the amount of green house gasses produced into our atmosphere now for the islands shrinking that is probably cause by global warming no doubt. I too like most people am a little baffled on why no one has done anything about this? Global warming probably does cause alot of the natural occurrences in the world. For example water rising it getting warmer out side and so on.

I think that this is an interesting event that happened in the Bay of Bengal. I never thought that global warming is taking this huge of an effect. Annie got me thinking with her question of what if the water level continued to rise? What is going to happen to Earth? I never really thought of this in depth. If it has taken effect and already made an island disappear, then how long will it take to cover the rest of the land? Soon the beach won't be in Galveston anymore, but it will be in Houston. Therefore, I do think that global warming has taken affect on this island. I also think that it is pretty funny that global warming solved this conflict.

I’ve never really paid any mind to global warming, it’s just been something taught as “scientific fact” that is suppose to have some sort of vital effect on the world but it’s never had any impact on my life at all, so now it’s interesting to actually see real life altering proof of global warming. We all hear about it in the news about how global warming affects the world but you never actually see it first hand in our community. Although even still this outcome of the rising sea level is clear across the globe, there’s no denying that it is in fact real and it is a major issue. The article states that: “Now [due to] rising sea levels […]the island's gone…It’s disappearance has been confirmed by satellite imagery and sea patrols”. I feel like this article buts the issue out in the open very simply and directly with a clear cause and effect so that there’s no denying it.

This article proves, to me, that global warming is a real thing, and it posses a threat to our lives. This shows global warming is increasing as the years draw on, but whether it's us or natural causing is still being disputed.
This also proves to us that fighting over something so small and meaningless isn't worth the struggle. In the end all the fighting was worth nothing. We could all learn a lesson from this, about peace and learning what's a priority in life.

This article tells us of how the global warming is affecting people today. It shows us some of the effects global warming can do to destroy the people or basically the world. So many people had to get out of their house just because of the sea level change from the oceans because of the global warming. This article describes how global warming could slowly destroy us the people. The author of this article also mentioned that in Bangladesh there are twenty million people that are going to have to leave just because of the rising sea levels and there going to have to move to a total different place.

This article is very interesting to me. A bunch of people around the world are thinking humans are causing global warming and that we need to "go green", but yet these two countries are fighting over a very very small island that is now underwater. To me it seems practically impossible for such a small increase in sea level to effect a place so much. 3 millimeters of rise in the sea level over the Indian Ocean in the past few years has now caused an island to disappear. Now, we predict this to happen to a major delta, Bangladesh, in the future. This is a really weird and interesting article to me, I've never heard of any island being covered by water or disappeared because of global warming.

The article is quite unique to me, i have never heard of an island just dissapearing. I think its crazy that it got overflowed or whatever happened to it i think that there is a promblem that the water is rising and may affect other places not just those islands. I think we will have to work fast to find out what is going on and try to address the promblem and fix it somehow.

I find it disturbing that the water level could rise to the point where island can disappear. Also this is a huge topic that is debatable. It could or could not be in fact a product of global warming, but it is a great springboard for the activists who are trying to prevent global warming. If it was indeed caused by global warming, then it just shows the intensity of possibilities that could happen, endangering human life or even possibly civilization.

I think that the way people are freakig out over global waring is ridiculous, the earth has had its ups and downs all through out history even before there were cars, factories,or in general as any people as we have today. Yes it may have been the reason for twon islands sinking, but the earth is something that no man can controll, or so i believe. I believe that we may be able to do little things here and there, but people are asking the society to change there complete daily lives.

We should start taking global warming issues as a serious matter, as the people from the other side of the world are taking the consequence of our actions. Alright so there is huge problem out there and all those two countries can focus on is their island. Yes its a mess and eroding or already has eroded but if they want their people to live they need to focus on the global warming. This is a huge deal in the world and it's not doing well they need to compromise so that they can fight this global warming together so they can end well with a good result. Fighting does not solve anything it just makes things worse for everyone around. They need to focus on the global warming if they want to have people living in their country.
