Female suicide bomber hits Iraq pilgrims, kills 54

By BUSHRA JUHI

Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD (AP) -- A female suicide bomber mingling among Shiite pilgrims in Baghdad detonated an explosives belt Monday, killing at least 54 people, officials said.

The bombing was the first major strike this year against pilgrims making their way to the southern city of Karbala to mark a Shiite holy day. It came as a security official warned of a possible increase in attacks by insurgents using new tactics to bypass bomb-detection methods.

The bombing raises fears of an escalation of attacks as hundreds of thousands of Shiites head to Karbala to mark on Friday the end of 40 days of mourning following the anniversary of the death Imam Hussein, a revered Shiite figure.

The bomber hid the explosives underneath an abaya - a black cloak worn from head to toe by women - as she joined a group of pilgrims on the outskirts of Baghdad's Shiite-dominated neighborhood of Shaab, said Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, Baghdad's top military spokesman.

The bomber set off the blast as she lined up with other women to be searched by female security guards at a security checkpoint just inside a rest tent, al-Moussawi said.

A police official said 54 people, including 18 women and 12 children, were killed and 117 were wounded. A hospital official confirmed the casualties. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene in the minutes after the blast.
Raheem Kadhom, 35, said he was standing nearby when a huge fireball erupted among the pilgrims.

Pilgrims were "on the ground, covered in blood and crying for help," he said. "Banners were all over the ground and covered in blood."

The blast was so powerful it knocked some out of their slippers and shoes, which were scattered across the ground, he said, adding how people put the wounded in cars, taking them to hospitals rather than wait for ambulances.

Despite an overall decline in violence in Iraq, al-Qaida and other Sunni extremists have routinely targeted pilgrims in an attempt to stoke sectarian strife and weaken the Shiite-dominated government.

The vast numbers of pilgrims and the distances many of them must travel at predictable times of the year make it all but impossible to guarantee their safety against extremist groups. The pilgrims targeted Monday were walking from the northeast Diyala province and other areas north of Baghdad, police said.

During a pilgrimage in February of last year, a female suicide bomber attacked a tent filled with women and children resting during the walk to Karbala, killing 40 people and wounding 60 others. A month before that, a suicide bomber dressed in women's clothing and hiding among Iranian pilgrims killed more than three dozen people outside a mosque in Baghdad's Shiite neighborhood of Kazimiyah.

Security forces were put on alert shortly after Monday's attack, al-Moussawi said.

"We informed all checkpoints to be careful and to intensify the search procedures," he said.

Iraqi authorities lack enough policewomen to conduct searches of female travelers at most checkpoints, and security forces have been reluctant to use bomb-sniffing dogs against people because of cultural sensitivities.

Al-Moussawi warned insurgent groups were using new tactics to smuggle explosives past security forces.

"Terrorist groups have come up with ways to hide explosive substances that cannot be detected with bomb detector sets," he said in a statement posted on his Web site.

Iraq's forces have been using a bomb-detection device at checkpoints across the country that Britain banned for export after questions were raised about whether it works. Iraqi security officials have insisted it works, though they began their own investigation after the U.S. military also said the device did not work.

Meanwhile, Baghdad's military command has referred 134 members of Iraq's security forces for investigation. They are suspected of negligence for the security lapses that allowed last week's suicide bombings at three hotels and Baghdad's main crime lab, al-Moussawi said.

Meanwhile, Iraq's election planning has been mired in controversy over the banning of candidates for suspected ties to Baath Party, with some Sunnis claiming the blacklist is an attempt by the Shiite-led government to undermine their candidates.

U.S. Ambassador Christopher Hill told The Associated Press Monday that the elections need to be widely accepted as fair otherwise protests by the losers will bog down the new government.

Hill believes that a fierce controversy over a ballot purge of candidates who are suspected Saddam Hussein loyalists will likely be resolved before the vote.

An estimated 450 candidates have been barred from the ballot for suspected links to Saddam's now outlawed Baath Party.

Hill said he believes Iraq's government will open its vetting process to show voters why certain candidates were disqualified from running.

I understand that the police officers (males inparticular) are limited in what they can do to detect bombs. But, what I don't understand is how one person came smuggle all of that artillery under their clothes without someone around them noticing. Also, if these people that are causing these bombs are discriminating against the ending of the 40 days of mourning.

I think it is totaly wrong what that women did. I don't see why they have to keep bombing places, i'm sure they could resolve this situation in a different way. They don't have to use terrorism and kill innocent lives. I hope we find these leaders so we can end this because it's horrible to see that all these people died for no reason.

I think this is further evidence of the damage that the U.S. has done in the reigon. Invading Iraq pushed things over the edge, the area was unstable as it was. The U.S, invading was like a bomb going off in the face of the world, sure there tyranical leader was a threat to other country's in the area, but so is all out civil war. Afganistan was a war that should have been fought but we other stepped our power by invading a country without the sanction of the rest of the world. By over throwing Iraq's government and forcing upon it's people Democracy we have betrayed the words of our for fathers to stay clear of foreign entanglement and the insurance of domestic tranquility. We have endangered millions in this region sparking an all out genocide of the shiite people, similar to what happened in Rwandan.

I think that it is truely sad how these people were killed and wounded- it is an inhumane way to die.People come for religious purposes and are bombed, as not to be able to live the rest of their lives. I think that people should find other ways to deal with their discrimination because the way their doing it is making matters worse.

Ok now i do not know anything about the whole terrorist and suicide bombers motive for what they do, but i wonder do they have a conscience?!?!?! They just kill people for fun it almost seems. No matter how bad a person is, noone deserves to die. Only God can determine your death. Noone should determine your future. I constanly ask why, when i hear about another terrorist attack on the news. What is the motive?!?! With this situation, where are the cops!!! Military!!! Because now and days people have gotten wayyyyyyy smarter, and i think they have completly outsmarted the law enforcement down there. Because this is just crazy how many people have lost their lives down there. (Sorry if i got off topic, but im tired of hearing these terrorist attacks!!! lol)

Terrorism has occurred for quite a while. It’s a leader’s main instinct when they are in need of revenge. Innocent people are killed and absolutely nothing is won or succeeded. Although, it is quite strange to see a female terrorist. One can see just how hopeless she was that she had the nerve to go kill herself along other 54 or so simply to satisfy others. Does anybody respect themselves anymore? It’s amazing how people can be so moronic. What did these people ever do to you individually? And why do innocent people who have no say in what their leaders do have to suffer? If one wants to sort things out they should certainly not handle it this way but rather in old fashioned way where agreements can be reached. I understand that whenever religions are discussed it usually never ends pretty. But what I do not understand is why death ever has to become an issue. One should believe what they are raised to believe and mind their own business on what others believe in. Sure no two will ever have the exact same lifestyles but so what, get over it! One shouldn’t be criticized on what or who they praise too or definitely not taken their life away from them.

This bombing is really heartbreaking and meaningless. This ongoing war between the Sunni and Shiite Muslims is hurting harmless people who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I believe that the terrorist are using women because when we think of terrorist we think of a Muslim man with a gun, but they are trying to prove the point that nobody is safe. They do not realize that they are killing their own kin but none the less do it. In every religion there are those who want to take it to the extreme and work through force in order to convert a person to their faith. The Muslim extremist feels they are converting their fellow countrymen by killing them and they are assuring themselves passage into their form of a heaven. I think no matter what happens, whether they strengthen weak points or make new bomb detectors the terrorist will out maneuver them in some way. They only way to solve this problem is to strike it at the heart, the people who are spreading the ridicules idea of killing other and one’s self for a religion . The government needs to stop Al Qaeda, as far as they are concerned these people are just expendable pawns in their hands that they use to strike fear into people’s hearts and mistrust their government. It is up to the Iraqi people and the Iraqi government to fix this problem.

In our society in the United States, we are used to advanced methods of security whether it be in an airport, or in our own home (security system).
The ability of some security forces in some parts of the world may not be as advanced, and for many reasons it may be harder for them to detect the existence of weapons of destruction. Especially when hidden under clothes.

This illustrates why the U.S. government needs to get out of the middle east, because it has little skin in the game to really improve things. As tough as it is to say, the Iraqi people need to left alone to sort own issues out. If anything is to be given to them, how about food, instead of more people with weapons? And obviously it's sad (and downright frightening) that a woman (or anyone, for that matter) would sacrifice their life for religion, an institution I see as unnecessary and antiquated. The terrorism won't stop, however, as long as the U.S. continues to provoke it. Sad stuff :(

I think whoever is doing these bombings have some really major mentally problems and they should probably be locked in padded rooms wearing straight-jackets somewhere. What's the point of blowing up a bunch of innocent people and killing yourself at the same time? I also think that securtiy should be increased and here's and idea on how to check people for bombs and or/ materials required to make bombs, check the hair. People can put hairspray on their heads, cover their fingers in gun powder or a powdered explosive of some sort, then run their fingers thourgh their hair and it'll stick. People did that with gold dust durning the gold rush in order to keep their gold from being stolen by theives, and some people still do that today with weed and other drugs. Make them wash their hair in a shower. They have to come out completely soaked. Also some people could just swallow the bomb, put a timer on it and swallow it. It's that simple. (Don't ask me how I know this stuff, I just know it.)

Terrorism is not a surprising thing to occur in this word. It has been going on as far back I could remember. Revenge is quite a natural thing for human beings. So much people have died or have been injured for terrorism. I think it is devastating when someone kills herself just for sake of others. Many innocent people undergo death because of what their society is doing. People should not fight in order to get agreements but rather talk calmly then aggressively. Whenever discussing religions it can be a little harsh with different opinions. No one in this world should be criticized in what they believe in or there opinions.

It is good that the officers at the security checkpoints are doing more to help find those who are trying to bring in explosives. They need to be more careful though. They need to be updated when a new substance of an explosive comes out, so they would confescate it before anyone gets hurt. There is an increase in the terrorist attacks and people are starting to be more aware of it.

Such acts of terrorism often causes many people to be bewildered, unable to understand the motives behind the attack. The fact that they are human as well, however, has to be taken into consideration. All humans have firm beliefs, set values, and desires. The terrorists just happens to believe differently than the general public and so we view them as 'crazy' and 'mentally troubled'. It is true that resorting violence to achieve their dreams is extremely selfish and unmoral to say the least. The main point of terrorism is to use 'terror' in order to control people. Its effects will always be temporary and have to be reinforced constantly. Even if people were to obey the terrorists, life will never be peaceful.

Aside from the reasons for terrorism, people has to realize its potential to harm and happen anywhere. In the article, it stated "Iraq's forces have been using a bomb-detection device at checkpoints across the country that Britain banned for export after questions were raised about whether it works." Such carelessness and ignorance is what cost the lives of numerous people. When even the most basic of precautions aren't taken, then casualties are, of course, more likely. Also, regarding the bomb-sniffing dogs' likeliness of invading religious acts is entirely obsolete compared to the importance of safety.

When people are pursuing their own, true righteousness, can the "War on Terrorism" be won?

We examine a very important concept in this article; the idea of women being extremists. Men have always been stereotyped into being the extremists of the world that the women are never doubted. The article gave us three examples of when women were extremists and what this shows us is that the Taliban extremists are actually doing a very good job of expanding their clan because we along with the Iraqi soldiers haven’t done a good job on buckling down on them. They have now changed genders and are now including males and females in their extremist actions and what we saw from the Christmas day flight to Detroit that the extremists are migrating countries as well and recruiting extremists not only from their own region or country but from other continents and countries as well because they are gaining power and If we don’t defeat them soon, the unfortunate truth is that they will slowly start taking over the world.

The second concept we look is at is the advancement of weapons all around the world and how this has given extremists a hand up against their specific governments. We saw how the security force didn’t have the tools that they needed and how they were behind while their fellow extremists had moved right on along and on their way to the finish line while we were falling behind. The implication here is that we need to improve or help the Iraqis improve their security force so we’re always one step ahead because as of right now the protection of the Iraqi people means our protection because as long they are attacking their own people, they will not hesitate to hurt the people of the world and their number one enemies, the AMERICANS! Arms play a very important part in this war and a good defense and offense with both arms and security will put us in first place all the way through this race.

Finally, the third concept to look at here is that the Iraqi people need a strong government in order to feel safe and protected and have a good stronghold on this war on terrorism. If the government in Iraq is going to be strong then they need a strong presidential candidate and someone who is nationally accepted because the Iraqi people need somebody they believe in and trust and the only way they are going to do this is if they are truthful to their people and tell them everything they need to know because the Iraqi people have doubts still. The second reason they need a strong president in Iraq is because as much as the Americans are helping the Iraqis, it is the Iraqis playing field and the American government needs a strong Iraqi government to collaborate with in winning this war on terrorism because America is going to come out VICTORIOUS in this war!!

This incident provides a new radical stereotype into society as well as a fresh idea. Usually, the attacks are performed by men, yet this attack by a woman shows the drastic measures terrorists are taking currently to prove their point. Since 9/11, the attacks by terrorists have been more minor due to tightened security. Normally, the stereotype is turned towards men,yet this incident shows that there should not be a bias toward what a terrorist should be. The guards performed their duty fine because the bombing has occurred outside their jurisdiction. Terrorism will be impossible to prevent, yet these tightened security can help prevent from future incidents like this.

I my self find this very petculear because i have always thought that the Taliban and Al Quada shunned woman and the idea of them doing anything. Also if they are resorting to woman perhaps they are running out of men to do the job. What I do think should be done though is the journey needs to be put on hold regardless that it is religious and tradition because of these times there is more danger. why should the government waste its time looking after people walking when they could be doing something for useful. Obviously if they can't check teh women because they get all upset then don't let them go the idea of sing a dog is very good but they can still obviously get around that so my input is that they should stop all these joineries and protect the cities and check points around there rather then watch some walkers.

I agree with Alexis and Eriel. What is the point of bombing innocence people? It’s like a massacre Sunnis are killing Shiites because of what, they don’t believe in the same thing? Why aren’t the police OF THAT AREA helping these people. I think the world is very advanced and with the technology we have, the world can overpower terrorist. If Muslims were killing Christians in the United States it would not last long because we would put a stop to it very soon. (Sorry no offence to any religion it was just and example the religions were picked at random ). These Shiite people were going on a religious journey and murdered. What kind of world do we live in if people can’t happily respect their religious obligations? It’s atrocious how some one especially a women can kill so many people especially twelve completely innocence children. I don’t mean to be sexist but women are usually the motherly one how can you look at children and be okay with killing them like they are nothing. Now those children’s lives have been cut short because of terrorist. If women police are limited hire more there is an easy way to solve most of the world’s problems but every one wants to go the hard way. I think these terrorist are pointless you kill yourself for your religion okay but don’t kill other innocence civilians. The bombings are becoming worse and it won’t stop until these people get what they want and from the looks of it they want every one to be Sunni. But they isn’t fair.

I hate reading these kinds of articles in which one person takes innocent lives in an instant, this makes me wonder, why would people do these things? Terrorist groups are inhumane and the only way to stop them is to kill them all, which will only lead to a never ending cycle of violence and death. This group only wanted to go on a religious pilmigrimage, I'm pretty sure none of them meant any harm to anyone especially the Taliban. If the government doesn't step up to do something every innocent person will die.

I think that suicide bombing is overall wrong and cynical. men is one thing, and it still remains an insane destructive casue to people in the middle east but for women to begin the horrendous act is absurd. I agree that religion plays a big role in how they deal with these problems but they need to discover a new way to find bombs and other potential threats. If it was possible for people to make a system that was 100 percent fool-proof then that would be ideal, but for the remaining time they will have to makeshift with what they have. I really do not comprehend what these people are thinking when they do such things as they are killing temselves and others.

I`d have to agree with Taylor Allerman. Our interaction with the already unstable Iraq community could have brought the residents there an urge to do something violent in order to regain what they had. Like Alexis, I also wonder why certain people would do such things, to kill without reason. Is there really no better way to solve their problems but to go around, damaging the area and put the people in danger ? It`s understood that the terrorists might hold different beliefs or simply try to get revenge for whatever reasons , but is that enough to take the lives of hundreds of people ?

The idea of setting up checkpoints to acquire all smuggled items including weaponry and such explosives . The advancement in both technology and weapons and explosives had both its advantages and disadvantages . With all the new inventions, we are allowed greater protection . At the same time, however, we still have to keep in mind that there will be times when people take it to the extreme and use these objects to threaten lives . Security advancement should be put into consideration in all areas to insure the safety of everyone , everywhere.

Having the terrorist be a female, there`s no question that violence has been spreading and influencing all types of people. The stereotypical statement is that men are normally more violent than women . Clearly, that`s not always exactly true in some cases . Terrorism has been going on for years . The continuation of it is evidence that the people aren`t going to stop until they reach their goal, whatever it may be.

Refering to Jibin`s comment about the people “trying to prove a point but blowing themselves up isn`t going to get them anywhere”. In a way, I`d have to disagree with that. Surely they aren`t making anything better , but they are getting more attention. That might be one of the reasons why this woman set off this bomb. Because women in some areas are still seen to have less authority, this could have been their way to bring upon themselves the attention of others.

This article aggravates me very much because the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, and all these terrorist groups influence people just like us, innocent, to hurt others without any enmity to them. This especially makes me mad because being a part of the Muslim community myself; our reputation if any is left falls deeper with every bomb explosion. And the worst part being they kill themselves along with the others, is that to keep them from coping with their guilt? Then they should be alive, to see the aftermath of these bombs on all these individuals, and their relatives.

Having a certain belief like Michelle said doesn't mean that people can just go around killing other people because they don't have the same belief as them. I find it very annoying to hear about all of these terrorism attakcs in a country that already has major issues going on. Instead of helping out and creating peace in their country they decide its okay to cause suicide bombing. Plus I think that part of the problem also includes whether the security there is really doing their job right, I mean why use a bomb- detector that doesn't even work properly when you can improve on the way things go. That's my opinion, but seriously the securities need to pay more attention to the things that are going aroud them and if it means getting a little smarter, then so be it. They also need to recgonize that not all men are terrorism, women can be one too.
I do agree with what Jibin said about not having anything solve when they just blow themselves and other up, but some just don't understand that concept and think if they cause a majoe problem then people would pay attention to them, which is what is going on now.

We should take into mind that they want something and they will do sanything to get what they want. Why would people go as far as suiciding? What does this accomplish with the death of people? The security should anticipate the higher levels of suiciding now and upgrade their security measures. Since the war has been going on this long, I feel as if the government let this happen and officials in it are corrupt with sick minds. The cycle of terrorism has been giong on for years. We cannot fully stop them because for evry terrorist group we stop, there will be on guy/girl that will ultimately want revenge and spark a new war. The act of terrorism is a well known issue in our world today. The idea that having differences in beliefs have caused to act in such a way that costs the lives of others disturbs me. Instead of coming to an agreement or compromise, people have decided to cause suicide bombings. I believe security is part to blame for the loss of lives simply because its their duty to constantly be on the look out for things such as these. They need to do a better job at the task they have been given and they need to pay more close attention. Also, they must e able to come to the conclusion that anyone could be a terrorist could be either gender, not just males. Wow! Personally I would never be a suicide bommer. Usually in cultures like this you see the men being suicide bommers not the women so that was a bit of surprise. These conflicts in this area remind me of the many different tribes in Africa and how constantly there in one trying to get rid of the other. All of this conflict is either caused by a lack of enough space for the cultures to live peacefully among each other or becasue of a demand to obtaine more land from the leaders. People of different background should be able to live together without to much trouble considering God put us all down here together. Why fight against it?
How in the world could check points be reluctant to use bomb sniffing dogs? I mean i understand the whole "culture sensitivity" but come on. Do you want people dead or a little scared of dogs? We all know the logical answer. But in any country dealing with bomb threats is a big deal and has to be dealt carefully or even the people will turn against you. The best idea is to be calm but assertive when searching everyone. You never know when the person you said was clear, will ten minutes later blow you up.

I think that the Iraqis should advance their bomb security. They should update their bomb detector equipment especially if other countries say it doesn’t work. I think that they should probably also have more policewoman so that the woman bombers are not over looked as easily. I think that because these religious groups of people are targeted so often that they should be protected so that they are not as easy a target to bomb by the bombers. It just makes me so sad when I look at the newspaper and see reports of more bombings. The senseless killings of the innocent (Or not so innocent) masses. These types of reports are everywhere, on the television, and now I'm even seeing them on my school blogs!? What the heck!?
Many people ask how they could have successfully done something like this, but they never thought to ask themselves, what situation are the people in Iraq under? I agree with Amber, when she said that we here in America are used to very high security almost everywhere we go. Not only do they have worse security, they were trying to get thousands of people through in a fairly short time period. In addition, the article stated that the woman blew it up while waiting in a security line. Obviously this means that she had not had a chance to be caught yet, and hadn't gone through their security checks. I don't think she would have been caught had they tried this in America. I fly across the country at least twice a year, and there is no personal security until the carry-on check. Anything before that is just for bags to go in the luggage portion of the plane. If they had blown the bomb at one of our airports, right before the security check-in, I'm fairly certain that they would've had nearly the same end result.

I heavily agree with everything that Nancy had said. Why is it that a country that is already mixed up in very bad situations is still having suicide bombings? And now the police forces, who were already limited in their searches of citizens, are using a bomb-detector that theoretically doesn't even function properly AND now have to be on the look out for not only male terrorists, but also females. Every part of what is happening referring to this issue in Iraq is a game of cat and mouse. However, in this version the cat is the terrorists who always seem to be one, if not two, steps ahead of the mouse, the Iraqi police and security forces. And one more thing, why is it that people choose to be terrorists and threaten innocent peoples lives? To me, these types of people want fame, regardless if it is good or bad, and that they are the criminals that simply live to watch others suffer. They don't want anything so they can stop terrorism, they just want to see everybody perish under their flames. However, this is my opinion. What do you think about terrorists motivation for pursuing that particular life?

This article kind of worries me. I mean, if suicide bombers can kill and wound that many people by walking imagine what they could do in even higher populations of people. For example, everyone knows that suicide bombers usually blow up planes, what if they go at a busy time, when a lot of people are in line for security, and blow themselves up before they are checked? I mean, why would they wait to get on the plane and kill seventy or so people, when they could be in the airport and kill hundreds. That is what makes me a little bit worried because of this article, because there are people out there who believe that blowing someone into smitherines is the way to take care of your problems. Why don' people ever think of talking it out?

Terrorism is a truly frightening thing, as you have no idea who the person might be, or when they would strike. The advantage of surprise is unfortunately, on their side. The idea of terrorism is extremely selfish and underhanded. It is purely based on results. It doesn't matter how they try achieve their goal, as long as they achieve it. That means they will not take little, sly, political steps to power, but base their advances on human's most primal instinct, fear and attention, or blowing people up. It is obvious then why terrorism is such a powerful force and many countries are fighting and taking actions to prevent it. But as shown in this article, gender doesn't matter if the extremist are so determined for whatever their cause might be.

As of right now, the only help in prevention to suicide bombing is to check individuals during these religious pilgrimages using everything they can. Although that would be little help because any one could just drive a truck through the police with a bomb, but at least its something. Until we have developed some kind of technology that would deactivate any bombs within a certain range, I suggest they screen people for background and any association that might lead to a suspect.

I find it quite strange that a woman was used as a suicide bomber. In the arab religion, women are not usually the ones to do anything out of the house. She was probably used because she would be less suspected because she is a woman. For the lack of women on the police force, go find some. Go ask for help from other countries if there are no women willing to do the job in your country. Also the situation with the dogs. Dogs are found dirty and unclean in the arab society. A main reason people would be offended by having a dog search them is because if they are going to pray, then they would have to wash themselves and clean their clothes because it would have been infected by the uncleanliness of the dogs.

It is not right to take away life from anyone. Terrorism is something that human beings choose to do. It needs to be stopped. I agree with Josilyn that it is not a surprice because it has been going on for ages. No one should be taking aways lives because it is one thing that they cannot return. Terrorism should not be welcomed in any countries. Now women are part this illdoings. We should not give them any chance of being a terrorist. It needs to be removed our society.

The Shiites and the Sunnis have been fighting since the Muslim religion began and have not ever been able to resolve their differences. I'm thinking they won't be able to and the new Iraq government needs to consider this. The suicide bombing will not stop since they are directly tied into the Muslim religion. Anyone who claims to be Muslim and dies due to anything related to Holy War will instantly go to Heaven. Despite the fact that the Sunis and the Shiites are both Muslim, they consider fighting against each other as Holy War.

The government's excuse for not instigating functional screening devices is pathetic (not enough women screeners, dogs not allowed, and faulty equipment still being used.) Obviously, cultural preferences are being deferred to. Screenings won't keep the suicide bombers out since both sides are aware of the weaknesses.

Maybe it's time Iraq went the way that Yugoslavia and Czechloslavakia did. They split amicably due to cultural differences.

Some suicide bombers really think that what they're doing is right! It's really hard to believe, but it's apparently part of their religion... though you wonder why there are muslims here who say that has nothing to do with their religion. I think they perverted their religion to get political power. They use suicide bombers for this purpose, and also female suicide bombers! I can't believe girls are getting involved in this violent act. Didn't their family stop them? But I think that our security is good, but it needs to advance as quickly as they're finding their way in. Basically it's a game of cat and mouse, trying to be ahead trying to guess their next move. That's pretty hard isn't it? We've got to give our country some credit for the advance in security since 9/11.

I believe these bombings are very sad and im confused on why someone would want to do this. First of all hiding bombs in this certain clothing is very genius it will be very hard to detect causing much more fear throughout this region. I'm also wondering why do it on Muslims, is it because of their religous practices. I dont know what these Shiite muslims could have done but to kill a religous group is even more sad. I believe these suicide bombings have become out of control and need to be stopped before more harmless people die.

  39. I think it is very sad when someone just kills many people like that. I don’t understand why they would do this what do they get out of this. Don’t they have other things to do then kill people? It was very depressing to hear when a suicide bomber kills 54 people. We have enough problems in this world and now people are bombing each other. Innocents die every day it’s not fair. Countries should learn to be friends and learn to share and care.

I just can't seem to get why people do things like this. Do they get some kind of sick pleasure from harming other people?
If they don't be believe in something that someone else does why kill them. It just confuses me why people are so cruel. they don't think about anything but harming another.
think of the way our country felt during 9/11
we were so confused why this happened and why bad things happen to good innocent people.

I agree with Nancy, what's the point in using bomb detectors that don't work properly? They need to upgrade their technogloy, just a simple upgrade could save many lives. I think that people are so foucused on male terroism they pass up the females, not only males are dangerous. I think that these people should be checked more closely becasue letting killings like this happen this often is ridicolous.
Also people shouldn't try to solve their problems by killing tons of people. It doesn't matter enough to kill, just because you're a different race or religion. Just accept people the way they are, it's no reason to end other people's lives. I think something should be done about this, soon.

I believe that the checkpoints should have better securitiy to prevent future horrific bombings. The Iraqi government needs to invest in better bomb detection equipment to stop the amount of bombers who get by. They need to also drop some cultral traditions and actually inspect the women or either have more female police officers to check all the women. They need to focus on women a liitle more than before because they have been the focus of many recent suicide bombings. I am glad that Iraq is trying to hold fair elections and they are making an effort to not allow people who are loyalist to Saddam to be elected.

Well, I have to admitt that I am not someone to keep up with the war and everything that is going on over seas. So at home when the news is on, it is not out of the ordinary to hear something about the war such as 20 people being killed by an explosive in a car or Iraqi troops going off on the US troops. It is almost as if it has become a daily routine to hear about people DYING over seas. That is completely ridiculous how our country has gotten used to the idea of people being killed every second of the day. With this new situation of the female suicide bomber, it's like it s nothing new to the people of America. I am not saying this to everyone, because some citizens of our country are deeply concerned about this entire ordeal. But she killed alot of people AND herself. Why would you do something like that just to prove a point? To get back at someone? For revenge? What happened to world peace?

I just think we need to rethink about what belonging to a country means to us, because some people have not been showing the proper pride for The United States of America.

I agree with many people in that there is a new stereotype introduced in this article. People look at the men as the scarier sex, but really women can be just as harmful. This article is a perfect example. This woman killed many innocent people for no reason. I know that many people are doing their job in protecting people, but I think that many should start realizing people are trying (and succeeding) to kill people. Along with Nancy, I think that part of the problem is the bomb detectors don't even work. If people want to start ending such crimes, they need to look in to newer and better technology.

I personally just want this whole war to end, which is something that no matter how many people agree with me about does not seem to be appearing to happen any time soon. All of this terrist actions that are taking place in our country are just destroying peoples lives and killing innocent people, which is not fair to anyone. This article did suprise me a little because the terrist was a female and normally when you think of a sucide bomber you picture a male being the one to do it, or at least i do. I agree with what people have been saying in their responces about how i dont understand how someone could sneak something like a bomb under their clothes and get past security, i guess i just dont understand this because when i go places such as the airport securety is sooo crazy and seems to be so safe. This article is an eye opner for all of us that we need to be careful of our surroundings.

There's no question that men are more suspicious of suicide bombing than women, but violence and the mind set to kill has influenced all people, not just the male party. Women might even feel that they can "get away with it" (meaning suicide bombing) more then men can BECAUSE they are females. Because they are females, they are "weak" and "stupid" so they might think that no one would suspect them.
But the suicide bombing itself is unneccesary. What has caused these people to hate others so much that they would kill themselves along with mothers and CHILDREN. No matter how much hate is in you, killing a child who has not yet begun to think for himself is just horrible.
The violence coming from the Middle East has gotten out of hand. Someone needs to step in and control the madness, but doing that might lead to a war.

One thing to see from this event is irony. People see Muslims as terrorist. They see the people running in with guns dressed up as Muslims. This is another problem with the press. They portray things in a wrong way. If a person ever suggested that an American is to blame for the terrorism they would laugh at that person. Not it the partiality only for Muslims it is partiality for Arabs of any religion. At airports they do random checks for people with names like Hussein. Now a terrorist could be named Bobby Jack (not referring to somebody specific). The irony is that you see that terrorists attack Muslims also. This should take away the racial separation or at least help take it away.

One other important is that the “Good Guys” are behind in technology. The insurgents are able to stay one step ahead of technology. That should one high point when trying to face terrorists. It is like trying to fight a war against guns when all you have is arrows and bows. We can’t fight a war when the enemy’s technology is better than yours. It does not matter how many people go against. The whole world is against this one group and the entire world can’t do anything can’t stop anything. They are one step ahead of us. We make bomb finders they have already made bombs that can pass the finder. This is bad but it is also the only way technology progresses.

No matter what we do, by sending soldiers to the Middle East, terrorist attacks continue to occur. I dont understand why it won't just end. It was a good decision to take control, but we haven't (obviously) completely taken control. It's time to end it all once and for all. Send the terrorists packing. I don't know why we can't seem to do that. Let's buy some Nuclear Weapons. Even with a bad economy we somehow seem to get buy even with a major war going on. This kind of stuff REALLY needs to end.

I agree with many of the other students in saying, these women were wrong for what they did. That's totally crazy to go around killing that enormous amount of innocnent people. It's just not right, under any circumstances. It's especially shocking to me because everyone has this stereotype that only males are terrorists and this changes a lot for me. Meanwhile, these other law enforcement officers are trying to make things better but there are just too many people to check and go about, so it's practically impossible to insure 100% safety in times like those.

I would agree with Nancy and Michelle that if there are different takes or points of view on an idea you don't have to voice you opinion so loudly. But also, I can see the reasoning behind a suicide bomber. One could be the fight ffor the nation. Antoher could also be that ths idea has been ignored for so long. After being but back and delayed more and more, someone finally put an end to the dicussion. Itis finally decided. The same goes for terrorism, howvere that is to a more extreme extent. After all Jibli does state that it solves nothing by suicide bombing.

I find it interesting that the media makes such a large note that the bomber is female, as if that women can not kill innocent people as men can. Certainly many people view men as the main fighters of war, but I am not surprised to see women involvement in the terrorist activities.

Another thing oddly interesting is the bomb detectors that Iraq insists on using that both the British and the American governments have declared do not work. Perhaps they just want to discourage bomb use by frightening terrorists with the chance of getting caught, or perhaps they're just unwilling to believe that the American and British governments are telling the truth.

My last point of interest is this, people in these countries believe so much in their religion, and have such a hatred for the other religions that they would willingly blow themselves up for their cause. I know many Americans who are to lazy to even go to church on a sunday morning, let alone blow themselves up for their beliefs.

The women that was the bomber was known throughout the media. I think since she was a women she was more noticed and it was made into a bigger deal then a man bomber. The war seems to get worse everyday. They say they have it under control but they tell us that so we dont worry about it. The soldiers can not do it on their own. The war is a big thing and it needs to end. The war has been going on for too long.

I think that the Iraqis should advance their bomb security. They should update their bomb detector equipment especially if other countries say it doesn’t work. I think that they should probably also have more policewoman so that the woman bombers are not over looked as easily. I think that because these religious groups of people are targeted so often that they should be protected all the time so that they are not as easy a target to bomb by the bombers. I think that it is horrible that the woman have now joined in with bombing innocent people that are just practicing their religion. I agree with Nancy that people shouldn’t kill other people because they have different beliefs. That is just wrong.

I just hate how terrorist hold the people in hostage and make demands. The force of terror with terror has no end. People will always create new way to overcome the advanced security and perhaps even better security forces can’t be implement because of cultural sensitivities. The only way to resolve this is to find a peace between the Shiite and the Sunnis.

I think that it's terrible that people kill because they have different religions, different skin colors, or maybe they want land. There are better ways to solve problems other than blowing up people. If you blow up someone then they are going to want to get you back then you don't solve anything. If you talk about it though or come up with a comprimise that is alot beter than killing people. I know that is most likely not going to happen though so I think that they should get more secruity. Maybe get a dog that can sniff out bombs or just be a little more careful when they are checking people through secruity.

A female bomber was an eye opener to many people in the United States. Because it was a women, it was made a bigger deal than it should. The US doesnt hear about the war asmuch as it should. In my opinion, it is a big deal. Just because our country isnt affected in a major way, doesnt mean we should completel ignore it as if its not even happening. We our spening so much money on something that seems to be going on for forever! And the fact that they did put a female to do this job just hurts their people and how they are viewed more. That bad United States, it's not like anyone was conducting terroristic attacks back in the days of Saddam, oh wait, they were. In Northern Iraq they had several radical elements that were conducting on-going attacks against pro-democratic Kurdish political parties. Fullajah was almost considered "off limits" even for Iraqi military units as well as pro-Saddam loyalist. Even Saddam considered about taking out that whole city due to it's on-going problems with any authority or government. So while I get the fact that we went into Iraq for all the wrong reasons, the fact of the story is not, "look at what the United States brings..", but the act of terrorism against unarmed civilians. Once again the discussion turns from any focus or blame on the individual or that group that will take responsibility, but really it is all based on "this would have never happened if the US didn't invade Iraq." Actually it was going on except the control over most media outlets within Iraq would never publish or release such stories, hence that is why we never heard much about the Shi'a uprisings and the aftermath until we crossed into the Al Basrah region and found the mass graves. No real reporting was allowed inside those zones of control but the events still happened. Iraq was a messed up place before we rolled in, it was messed up when we rolled in, and until the Iraqi people want to take control and do it themselves then it will be messed up once we finally get out of there. Saddam was ambushed several times by terrorist who had a tribal differences between his Sunni tribe and his immediate family. Both sons Uday and Qusay were attacked on several incidents during various motorcades.

Here we have a repeated incident. Every year Shi'a and Shi'ite Islamic members will travel to Karbala and as far as An Najaf to pay respect and hommage to their beliefs. Every year the United States request additional support to provide security and firepower, and every year the Iraqi Government says, "no, we have it under control." Every year somewhere during the event some nutcase blows him/herself up, usually within the crowds and usually no where near an armed checkpoint or security location. But the tribal/religious/cultural differences between Shia, Sunni, Shi'te, Kurds, Turkoman, and Christians are imense and won't go away anytime soon.

It is sad to read that so many people have died because of these suicide bombings. If the police and governments don't step up, these extremist organizations are never going to stop until they run out of suicide bombers or until every last person has died. The exclusion of women as terrorists in the eyes of many people has made incidents like the ones listed above even more appalling and surprising. Getting the word out about stories like this will let people know that terrorists are not limited to only being males and will let police forces and governments be more aware of all genders, not just males.
