Scientists Discover Unknown Lizard Species at Lunch Buffet November 10, 2010
By Brian Walker
(CNN) -- It may be an old menu standby to Vietnamese diners, but it's turned into a smorgasbord of discovery for scientists.
Researchers have identified a previously undocumented species of all-female lizard in the Mekong River delta that can reproduce itself by cloning, and the story of how it was discovered is almost as exotic as the animal itself.
Leiolepis ngovantrii is a small lizard found only in southern Vietnam. A Vietnamese reptile scientist who came across tanks full of the remarkably similar looking reptiles at small diners in rural villages in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province became intrigued when he noticed that all of the lizards appeared to be female.
So the scientist, Ngo Van Tri of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, contacted an American colleague about what he was seeing. His friend -- a herpetologist at La Sierra University in Riverside, California -- immediately dropped everything to come out to assess the find.
Dr. Lee Grismer and his son, Jesse Grismer, a doctoral candidate, flew all the way to Hanoi and then faced a grueling two-day motorcycle trip out to a restaurant where the owner promised to set aside a stash of the creatures for study.
But there was a little problem, says Grismer.
"Unfortunately, the owner wound up getting drunk, and grilled them all up for his patrons... so when we got there, there was nothing left."
Faced with an empty tank and nearly dashed hopes, the men asked around at other cafes in the area for the local delicacy, and hired children to track down as many of the lizards as they could find.
The team soon had more than 60, and realized they had something special on their hands: a previously undocumented species.
"It's an entirely new lineage of life that was being eaten and sold in restaurants for food," says Grismer. "But it's something that scientists have missed for hundreds of years."
DNA sampling on the tiny reptiles brought another surprise: all of the lizards were female, and clones of their mothers.
It's a rare trait, but not unheard of. Some species of lizards and fish can adapt to parthenogenesis, or self-fertilization, especially when faced with adverse environments, pollution or over-hunting.
Grismer suspects that the lizards are a hybrid mix of two similar lizard species in the area, but one that is not sterile and is adapted to the increasing population of human farmers around it.
In fact, while scientists once led big expeditions to the most remote areas to find new animals, Grismer says today, that new frontier is quite often right in people's backyards.
"What we're finding is that local inhabitants know a tremendous amount about the natural histories of the regions in which they live," he says, adding that tapping into local knowledge has led to many new lizard discoveries. "It's not that they're not known... locals know all about them. It's just that they're not known to scientists."
So what does a plate full of Leiolepis ngovantrii taste like?
Well, nothing remotely like chicken, Grismer says.
"You wouldn't want to substitute it for a Big Mac or anything like that," he says, and you won't see lizard banh mi showing up on menus anytime soon.
Grismer complained that he had to hold his breath while eating the local dish to appear polite to the restaurant owners.
"You take a bite out of it and it feels like something very old and dead in your mouth," he said.

Please remember that this is an educational blog. Some of you are forgetting that. Some things that I am seeing:
ReplyDelete-Don't use words like "dude"
-"firstly" is not a word. It is being used quite a bit lately!
-Don't use "I mean..." Write what you mean.
-If you have to use a lot of commas, you probably need to begin a new sentence. I am seeing a lot of run-on sentences
-When referencing someone in the article, please spell their name correctly
-Don't forget about punctuation. Some of you are leaving off periods at the end of sentences.
Many of your thoughts and ideas are great! Keep it up!
I understand that it is quite unusual those scientists are now finding these uncommon lizards. What gets me wondering is how all these female lizards are multiplying, how the scientists cannot find a male lizard. I mean isn't it true that all animals require both sexes to perform breeding? I am going to look into this article and hopefully find more information on these lizards.

I think that its humorous how scientists can be so oblivious to something significant happening. There are probably dozens of new species that scientists have not recognized yet, but they could be "known to locals" like the article states. This new kind of lizard really shows how animals adapt and go through evolution. I would hope for studies to be done so the world can find out more about this. It's kind of gross though how people would eat it like its no big deal, but it could be an important thing in history.
The idea that this species is just being discovered is scary to me. I believe that scientist should know about these things way before this not matter their location. But the idea that a species is capable to duplicate itself is beyond me. This means our advancement in capability is way better than I thought. With this known, maybe more drastic and useful concepts will come forth and we'll have something to proud of in the future.

ReplyDeleteThis is amazing. Without knowing it these people have created a new species by over hunting one. On the other hand, maybe the inhabitants of southern Vietnam should be informed of the importance of not eating something when you don't know what it is, because one day someone is going to eat something with a deadly, contagious disease and kill 40% of the world population.

I don’t think it’s a surprise that they are just now finding this new species of lizards. I believe there are still countless species of every animal that are yet to be discovered. Animals change all the time depending on the conditions that they must adapt to. Depending on the environment, a grizzly bear could have gills. This is exaggerated of course, but I am only trying to stress the fact the there are countless possibilities when it comes to specie differentiation.

ReplyDeleteWell this is interesting, to say the least. I wonder how often discoveries like this are made, right off of people's dinner plates. It also interests me that the lizard can clone itself. I wonder what they will do with that.

It is very shocking to hear that these people have been eating this species for so long and that it has just now come to their attention that it is a species that they have never heard of before. Shouldn't they have enough sense to at least ask what it was before they ate it or ordered it? Nevertheless, it is good that these scientists are continually discovering new things; it just goes to prove how much we have to learn about the earth and mother nature.

This was a very interesting article for me. I think it's really cool how they're finding these unique type of lizards. But I do think it's gross eating something that you don't have much knowledge of. But anyways I think it's great finding these things and hope scientists find many more cool species.

ReplyDeleteI Love that there are still species out there to be discovered. I would love to be a scientist (marine biologist), and I like that there are still animals out there for my generation to discover. People say the Alaska is the final frontier, and there are huge parts of the ocean the man has not reached at all. It excited me every time I hear about new discoveries in everyday life, because it makes me think about what I will be able to find.

This might be the only article that actually got me interested. Finding a new species is like the next biggest thing. Especially finding a species only made of of females and they are still increasing in number. Hopefully, scientists will find out more and maybe discover something even more interesting in the future.
Amber Tunstall--4
ReplyDeleteThings like this are so interesting. The way the species is all female is really cool. That kind of stuff is happening to other amphibians and reptiles all over the world. Some of these animals have learned to change their gender when necessary. It's so fascinating! I can't wait to see what nature will reveal to us next.

Well, there is the idea of evolving, maybe even to the point where the male lizards have become useless in reproduction. Just like it has been said that humans came from fish... but you don't see fish now growing legs. However, if this could be proven to be true (not saying it could be), then who's to say we won't become lizards. Then there is the religious idea of G-d throwing a new species onto the earth for humans to discover. Can anyone even explain the appearance of dinosaurs?
Wow! A new lizard species how intriguing. The fact that the lizards clone themselves and do not sexually reproduce is surprising. It’s my first time hearing something like this. I hope scientist can discover more about these lizards, before they are on the "endangered species” list. You rarely hear news about new species these days on the news. This discovery is an example of how animals these days are trying to survive.

The idea that there is a lizard out there that can clone itself is amazing. More scientists need to look into the making of these lizards and they might possibly be able to take this knowledge and apply it to humans. With that advance in society we could achieve so much. It appears to me that this animals where created not naturally but by chemicals which causes me to think that the possibilities of cloning are very high.
ReplyDeleteI think it is amazing how they are finding new types of lizards. We need to find all the animals out there because, what happens if one of them are deadly and we don't have a cure for them. That would be really bad!

After reading this, I was awe struck. I had no idea that a lizard could clone itself. I think the discovery of the new specie is amazing. To have the knowledge of creatures like these just amazes me. I enjoyed reading about the determination of the scientists to find the lizards for their research. I thought it was pretty disgusting thinking that people eat these lizards. First of all, I wouldn't eat a lizard. Second of all, I would especially not eat a lizard that cloned itself and is a new species. Even though I would not relish eating fried lizards, people in Vietnam probably find this regular because it is part of their culture. Again, it wowed me to read about the discovery of these new lizards.

This article was quite nice, as it is interesting that an animal can clone itself. It is also interesting that the whole species is made up of females. I think scientists, especially those in Vietnam should have discovered this species earlier, because it is apparently a local dish. I think it is funny that some people have had this lizard in their stomach before scientists even knew about it. So basically the lizard was digested before it was discovered. But it is safe to say that this will not be the last discovery we make. There will be countless other animals discovered, and some may go extinct before scientists document them. They may go extinct because of over hunting, habitat destruction, or drunk restaurant owners grilling the whole species at one time. But I am still surprised at this new discovery of a lizard that is the exact copy of its mother.
This article, through my perspective was quite interesting, there is nothing I can't disagree, or rant on. It's great that we are finding out new information on our planet, and there should be more to explore. I personally enjoy reading about new species being discovered, but this is something different, I didn't know lizards could clone themselves. And another thing that gets me thinking here and there, why do people eat lizards like it's some sort of food source or something?
ReplyDeleteOh my god. The thought of people eating lizards is just way too disgusting for me. But on the other hand, the fact that they found a new species of lizards are pretty interesting. It's funny how all this time the people in the village were frying and eating them and the scientists had no idea they existed. Also, the cloning part is pretty cool and it makes me happy to know that they are all females! Girl power! Even then, eating lizards is creepy and scary to me.

This article is interesting. Having this discovery is tremendous but then eating the lizards is beyond me. But then you have to look at the location:Vietnam, and their normal diet. The lizards can clone themselves which is really cool, but even just the thought of digesting a lizard is nasty in my opinion.
Wow. A new kind of lizard that can clone itself. is that supposed to be special? There are other things that do it. Why is this a big deal? It was already there. It would still be there even if it wasn't discovered.

It's a bit interesting that the shop owner cooked the lizard without actually know what it was. Fortunately it was not poisonous. I think it's ironic that the unknown species scientists are trying to find is being eaten by the villagers. I cannot imagine myself chewing on lizard. Of course, different places have different food preferences.

This is interesting. The fact that this is an all female species of lizards is pretty interesting. I was actually surprised to read that all the lizards were clones of its mother. This kind of discovery makes me wonder what scientists will find next.

Excuse my sarcasm but this whole thing seems somewhat ironic. This scientist drops everything to go and find these lizards and then he sits down and eats them? Excuse me while I sit and drink from my cup of IRONY! Plus it's really not that amazing, they said they've encountered things like this before right? So here is the story; guy thinks these lizards look alike, calls up his scientist buddy, lose the lizards, get some more, study them, and then...EAT THEM! Hooray Science!!!
It is very interesting that they have found a different species of lizards. I think people eating and digesting lizards are very weird and shouldn't be done. There are many discoveries made every day about different reptiles. I hope scientists keep finding new discoveries as the years go by.

I believe that scientists will continue to find more and more species and I hope they do because I want to keep hearing about new discoveries.

ReplyDeleteI think it's funny that the locals were eating this unknown type of lizard without understanding what it could mean for scientists. People often assume that scientists have discovered everything there is to know about things so they don't think something can be important. For these people they just ate the lizards without knowing what they were eating.
I agree with Josh in saying that this is very ironic. People have been eating these lizards for years yet they are a relatively unknown species. But I'm not surprised that they are unknown; there are probably hundred of species of animals in this world that are unknown to man. I also think that it is weird for people to eat lizards, but that's their culture, so if it is not directly harming the environment we should let them be. Besides, the scientist must think so, as he ate them himself.

ReplyDeleteLike the old saying, "The answer is just under your nose". It's kind of like when you don't need something, it's always there. But when you actually need it, it's never there. The scientists were always searching for unknown species, yet the most obvious one was right under their noses. It was just too simple to actually think that the species would be there. As for the weird food, I can totally understand it. We Asians eat lots of strange things, so it's not uncommon for us to unintentionally be eating an unknown species.

ReplyDeleteThis article just goes to show that there are so many things out there that we as humans have no idea exist. The fact that a species can reproduce with just the female lizard is fascinating. I think that what scientists ought to do is to look closely at the genetics of this and find out if something can be reproduced for the human genome. The article has its' funny parts and it may have been meant to be viewed that way but it does start conversation about the scientific side of species reproduction. I would be interested if they were to find a lot of different species that could do what these lizards do and if it is just reptiles or other species. If there are other species that do this it would be interesting to study the DNA.

ReplyDeleteThis idea is very interesting, since it points out the flaws of scientists and how they do not fully understand everything about our world. To me, that is not a surprise since we all are human, and we are not perfect all the time. So, we must at least make do with what we have and discover new things to further enhance our knowledge on the environment around us. Even scientists admit they do not know what lurks beneath the depths of oceans along with not being able to document every single animal species, so its good to see how they take up a great responsibility in making sure these chances of meeting new things are not wasted. I guess its another thing we have to be thankful for, especially on a day like today.
HOLY COW, people have been serving this traditional dish and failed to notice the lizards cloned themselves from self fertilization. And I can't believe cloning is possible within one single organism! Its great scientists are finding new species and exploring what even villagers have as a simple delicacy.
ReplyDeleteIt is kind of amusing to me how those citizens of Vietnam were steady eating an undocumented animal. But it is good that scientists have got their hands on this animal. This just goes to show that there are many more species that we do not know about. Like it said in the blog, the lizards were all females and the offspring were clones of their mothers. That is incredibly unusual and suprising of how mothers make clones of themselves to create their offspring. Scientists can continue to study these animals and find out if these lizards can possibly benefit the human race for other than food. There are many animals that help do things such as cure diseases, so finding new animals can only help us. We need to continue to learn how to live with them because we can not survive without animals.

Scientists are making new discoveries every year and it's amazing how these species have the ability to do what they need to do. And also, eat lizards is not a weird thing to Asians. The interesting part of this article is the discovery of a new species. I find it shocking that it was unknown before this time, but this brings a whole new set of questions to the world of science. After this discovery, I'm sure that there will be plenty of research and experiments on the functions of these lizards. I'm sure that if there is a new species found here, there must be others lurking around and we just have to find them. The fact that they can clone themselves makes me think that their population can grow exponentially quickly and eventually become larger than the human population.

This discovery is very intriguing, I must say. To know that there is another inhabitant sharing Earth with us is sort of uplifting. Knowing that new life is roaming around is exciting, especially for the ones that discover the species. As interesting as this article comes to me, I am automatically worried by the news. Scientist's work is very beneficial and sometimes crucial to the life of humans, but people are sometimes blindsided to the toll it takes on animal species. I hear of all of the experiments performed on rats and now I can only assume experiments will be done to these lizards because of their strange method of reproduction. I won't be surprised if the animals quickly become extinct.

What I find interesting is that they can only find female lizards, and that they are clones from their mothers. So did they adapt to cloning by themselves or were they exposing to radioactive substances? If they didn’t find the lizards in time, could they possible be extinct? We have probably hundreds of more species to discover! I wonder how the lizards clone and see the process of them actually cloning.

In my opinion, this realization of a new species should have happened a long time ago. How could any person find a creature and not tell anyone about it? Why has no one even asked what it is? This shows poorly on the country's culture, because they will eat anything, even things "unknown to man".

This article sounds really strange to me. After reading this article, I seem to have many questions running through my head. One question would be how are the lizards multiplying if they are not being sexually reproducted? Also it sounds funny to me that scientists could have missed something like this and that they are now just starting to do research on these lizards. I think that if owners of the diners were serving these lizards on the menu for a while it seems, I would think that scientists would have heard about them and they would have started their research then. I guess not. I totally understand that some people might not like the food, because it already sounds wierd so what can we expect. I guess it all depends on the person's taste.
I find this discovery scary, yet amazing. It’s scary that these animals can replicate themselves. I personally have never heard of an animal that reproduces by its own. I think the scientists looking over a species of lizard shows ignorance of the human race. ReplyDeleteThis shows that the power of Mother Nature always could suddenly shift common knowing into making it uncommon. This is because people always think they are manipulating a species but in this case they did not and it happened purely because of nature. This created a unique lizard which produces young asexually. Furthermore, it proves the fact that what some people think are common foods can turn out to be a rare and exotic animal. Finally, this shows that cloning works in nature and that maybe cloning is a viable option for a person who loves their pet.

I wonder how many scientists ate these lizards before finding out they didn't know what it was. The idea that thousands of people ate these lizards and a missing piece of the animal kingdom was right in their mouths. ReplyDeleteThis proves that there is still a lot to learn about the world. With thousands and thousands of different species I’m not surprised these scientists found another species. We need to lose the mindset that we have the world conquered because we don’t, there are still many of things to discover. We can’t be stuck with the “world is flat” kind of attitude, because that’s what causes us to eat what we think to be a lizard already discovered. Then again, just because scientist haven’t recorded the species or it is not well known to the whole world doesn’t mean it is undiscovered.
ReplyDeleteTo me it's amazing that these lizards have gone undocumented and have been a meal for people for hundreds of years. It is so incredible how fishes and lizards can just do self-fertilization. I never knew that. It is disgusting to me that they eat lizards in Vietnam, but that is just my opinion. I'm sure it is something that they have unique about their country and culture just like how I and everyone else has our own uniqueness in our culture and country.

ReplyDeleteI like Leo's explanation and I agree. Scientists shouldn't stress so much about trying to find so many different types of species for whatever animal. I think instead they should focus on the most recent species that have been discovered and maybe in the meantime new species will also be discovered without so much effort being put into their discovery. That way the species will come to them rather than the scientists going to them.

This article made me laugh when I read it. To me it was funny that people were eating an “Unknown Lizard Species” like it was nothing. Plus how the scientist called the American scientist and his son to come and look for themselves this new lizard species that was discovered, and how the two American scientists dropped everything that they were doing to go see the lizards and when they got to the diner they found out that the owner got drunk and ATE the lizards. I am glad that America ahs found a new lizard species and the topic of the matter that the lizards “clone themselves” is very interesting. Hopefully with the discover of these lizards we can figure out how they “clone themselves” and where they came from.

I find it funny how these lizards have been known to those in Vietnam for quite some time, yet scientists are just now realizing that they are an undocumented species. However, the fact that all of the lizards are female and reproduce by cloning themselves is truly a phenomenal discovery. I honestly did not think that natural cloning was possible without some type of experimentation. The thought of eating a lizard, though, is hard for me to stomach. Although I can't judge anyone who enjoys consuming these rather interesting creatures since I don't live in Vietnam and don't know what they would consider a delicacy.

It's unbelievable that Leiolepis ngovantrii are only women that can clone themselves. I wonder how that process works and if any other species of animals can do that.
I believe the reason American scientist didn't know about this unique group of lizards is because American scientists travel around the world to learn about new species but look in the wrong places. Maybe tomorrow they'll get a call from African scientist telling them that they've found a new species of monkeys that have human behaviors and actions. If American scientist just ventured outside the U.S. they'd learn a great deal more about different species.

ReplyDeleteIt is intersting to know that all the lizards genders are female, and that nature already had its own version of cloning before we ever started to learn.Customers have been eating an undiscovered species for a long time without notice, someone said that if you take a bite out of it, it feels like something very old and dead in your mouth. This makes me think that there are so many things in the world that we haven't discovered yet.

It is very interesting that scientists have found a different species of lizards. It's great that we are finding out new information on our planet, and there should be more things to explore. It is very fascinating that these special lizards can clone themselves. It also makes me wonder, whatever they are using to clone, we can maybe find their cloning process, and maybe clone ourself.

You know this article was quite interesting. It was something that I have never heard of. Its so cool how there are so many undiscovered species in the world we havent found yet. I mean you have people eating lizards and they dident even know it! It makes you think about what you see everyday.

It is nice how these lizards clone and are only female. This discovery is a great way to research them. But, I don't get it... These lizards are an undiscovered species that have a rare ability and the scientist just ate the thing? I would have freaked and ran to the lab, but he ate it. That's like eating Bigfoot or alien brains if found. (I understand though. The lizards cloning ability is rare, but exists, so it isn't such a huge discovery. Also, no one is going to eat Bigfoot!)

Things like this are so interesting. The way the species is all female is really cool. That kind of stuff is happening to other amphibians and reptiles all over the world. Some of these animals have learned to change their gender when necessary. It's so fascinating! I can't wait to see what nature will reveal to us next.
I think it's great that new species are still being discoveries it lets us know that there is still so much to learn. What is even more interesting is how there are no male lizards which doesn't make sense. It is almost like the lizard is reproducing with mitosis and not the typical meiosis. Maybe with this new discovery we will be able to look more in to cloning ourselves and or random objects.
ReplyDeleteWithout knowing it these people have created a new species by over hunting one. On the other hand, maybe the inhabitants of southern Vietnam should be informed of the importance of not eating something when you don't know what it is, because one day someone is going to eat something with a deadly, contagious diseases.

It is so interesting how we actually found something that can clone itself. The possibilities of many other creatures that are undiscovered are very high, and it’s great that we have found the Leiolepis ngovantrii because, it shows us that the world is discovering new things and learning more and more everyday. I agree with Abels, soon we'll be so smart, that we could find the process of how these lizards clone themselves and use it to clone ourselves.
This shows that the power of Mother Nature always could suddenly shift common knowing into making it uncommon.

The discovery of these lizards is fascinating. The fact that these lizards can adapt to parthenogenesis really amazes me. Every time I read this article, it is still unbelievable to me that these lizards can so-call clone themselves. But it both interests and disturbs me when Grismer said that eating the lizard is like putting something old and dead in your
mouth.

This story is a prime example of how science is able to adapt to new findings within the blink of an eye. It really is reassuring to see that there are people who put their time and effort to provide more information for people to learn about. To make new discoveries about our world is always a positive thing, as that extra knowledge can be quite helpful in certain situations. I, for once, was shocked to hear this discovery as self-cloning animals are really rare on Earth. To find more information about these undiscovered species could help us also to move forward in knowledge as well as in technology too, just as Abels said.
I think that that's pretty cool that we found a new lizard species, but consider this if we don't ever eat it then the ppopulation can eventually grow and populate a lot of places so that's pretty messed up, but still pretty cool.

I find this article very interesting. Today we have scientist on the hunt trying to discover new species and new things about the creatures that wonder on and below Earths surface. The thing that amazes me is that one of those undiscovered species was right in the backyard of a local village. What makes this more interesting is that these people have known about this creature and have been eating it. Its funny how some of the worlds most advanced species could be right under our noses.
This discovery is one of thousands that humble our advanced society every day. The Vietnamese have been eating this lizard for centuries, and we, part of a “developed country,” did not even know that it existed until this year. Our country can send a man to the moon, but cannot find one terrorist hiding in a cave in Pakistan. We argue about state-funded healthcare and tax cuts, but every day in our country another child dies of starvation. The list is endless. Just like college football, we should accept that our system has flaws and move on. I believe America is still the greatest country. However, we should not claim to have all knowledge known to man because we simply do not.
ReplyDeleteIf you do a google image search for “Leiolepis ngovantrii,” you will end up with the same picture fifty times.
I fail to see the irony in this situation. This kind of thing happens quite a bit, actually, the only thing that is different is that they have been eating them. I am sure none of the cooks knew that this was some special kind of lizard and decided it might taste good if cooked.
ReplyDeleteI think this is very interesting. To know that there are still animals in the world that we have no knowledge of is amazing. I think its kind of nasty that people are eating the lizards. I hope scientist learn more about this animal because its neat how they can reproduce themselves.
ReplyDeleteLizards that have been living in this place, that have been served in cafes and restaurants as local delicacies. People have eaten these things, these lizards, a species that has not been documented, that were unknown to everyone. Theses small lizards called a Leiolepis Nogovantrii, amaze me, knowing that they can clone themselves, is just surreal and kind of hard to believe.

I thought this was one of the most interesting articles I have read so far. I thought it was weird how they didn’t know what they were eating and they just realize they are eating an unknown species. I think it is amazing to finally found out that the lizards clone themselves. But we still have many undiscovered species in our world waiting to be discovered.

ReplyDeleteIt's kind of funny how they were eating this lizard, and didn't know what it really was. I like this article, because it makes me think of all the other species, we've yet to find out there. It also shows you don't need to go deep into the jungle or ocean to discover something new, maybe it's right in front of you, and you've just never took the time to acknowledge it.

I find it very cool that the natives of Vietnam have been eating the lizard for years, and yet it was just discovered by scientists. Unlike many of the comments, I don’t find any irony in this article. This discovery is quite amazing if you think about it. These lizards have the ability to clone themselves and scientists have been working very hard for years to figure this out. I believe there are still great mysteries to be found in the world.
I think this is really cool. To be that scientist that discovered that species would be pretty cool. Also I don't believe how a diner could have been cooking those lizards for years and not notice something about the color or the characteristics of the animal. I also kind of feel sorry for all the locals that knew about the lizard. They knew the lizard a lot longer than the scientist had, yet the scientists are going to take all the credit. Next time I'll make sure to look at my plate before I eat my food.
ReplyDeleteI already read about this on the Yahoo front page article stuff. I was wondering how such an exotic species has been being eaten for years, but only now just been discovered by scientists. The restaurant must make a fortune too, since they don't have to actually buy any lizards. They can just let them clone themselves.

These scientists are making a big deal about finding this new type of species, when there are many more undiscovered species in the world. This new species shows how species have evolved over time, and adapted to the environment, but the truth is there are probably many other species which have adapted even more to the environment.
It's great that scientists discovered a new species of lizards. And I'm sure there are many more out there for them to discover. It's amazing that these lizards can clone themselves. I wonder how many other undiscovered species can do that. I wonder how the locals ate them if they knew it was a new species and if it tasted "old and dead."

This post was very interesting. It’s interesting that a lizard can clone itself. Now, that’s only one of many animals that were discovered from scientists. There are still many other animals that haven’t been discovered. It also disappoints me that people eat these species. It also grosses me out, if people eat lizards, but doesn’t know anything about them. It’s great to read about new discovered species!

The entire situation shows that even though how many humans are in this world that are lands and animals areas are sometimes overlooked. There maybe still other animals that are still yet to be discovered due to the remote areas in which they dwell. These inhospitable areas have stopped many species from being discovered and new lands to be explored. So the finding of this new species is not a shock.
This is interesting in finding a unknown species an in Vietnamese restaurant. By saying, this point is that Asian restaurant is usually dirty. Then why would any small creature would want to live there? In this point I think that unknown animal can be found around the world.
ReplyDeleteIt shouldn't be such a big surprise to find a new species of a lizard. But it is interesting though. Everyday I'm sure things are always discovered. For a fact, there's still so much to discover in the world, it's as simple as that.
ReplyDeleteI can't help but laugh a little bit after reading this. What kind of chef cooks without knowing what thing their cooking? I mean has anyone ever asked what kind of Lizard are they eating? If the Lizard was kept this long hidden, imagine the other animals out there that haven't been given attention to yet! The world's a huge place with a lot of different animals. We just have to look for them.

This article is very interesting. This is probably one of the most interesting article this year! I like the fact that there is a newly discovered species, but the fact that they have been eaten is a little disturbing. It is pretty ironic how this special species was discovered in a backyard of a local area! I agree with tyler, this does show how Mother Nature works!
