Violence Against Women is Epidemic in Guatemala

Violence Against Women is Epidemic in Guatemala

Feb. 22, 2011

In the small Latin American country of Guatemala, violence against women is a widespread problem girls deal with from a young age.

Parts of Guatemala have the highest murder rates in the world, according to the United Nations, especially along drug trafficking routes that lead from South America into the United States. The culture of violence has resulted in an epidemic of domestic violence, sexual abuse and rape, sex trafficking and femicide – the murder of women. In Guatemala, on average two women are killed every day.

“Culture of Terror” formed in decades of civil war

Guatemala is located in Central America, sandwiched between Mexico to the north and Honduras to the south. The country was colonized by the Spanish during the 16th century and became fully independent in 1839. Leadership switched hands between conservative dictators such as Rafael Carrera and more liberal presidents such as Juan Jose Arevalo who introduced a social security system and redistributed land to peasants.

The trend towards socialism in the 1950s concerned the Central Intelligence Agency in the United States, as the Cold War against Soviet communism played out in other countries around the world. In 1956, the CIA backed a military coup and the country fell into a decades-long civil war that left more than 200,000 civilians dead. During that time, the U.S. helped train Guatemala's military in counter-insurgency techniques.

In 1996 a cease fire agreement was reached between the insurgents and the military. The Archbishop’s Office for Human Rights discovered that over 400 massacre were committed by the Guatemalan army.

A 1999 United Nations-sponsored report stated that government officials and the military were responsible for 93 percent of the human rights violations committed during the war, including rape, torture and murder of indigenous Mayan populations.

Responding to the report, U.S. President Bill Clinton stated that the U.S. "was wrong" to have provided support to Guatemalan military forces that took part in the brutal counter-insurgency campaign.

Male-dominated patriarchy limits women's rights

The legacy of violence from the civil war is combined with Guatemala's traditionally male-dominated society. Women do not have the right to own property and are often neglected by police and the legal system.

Although over 10,000 women report being raped or sexually assaulted in Guatemala every year, the medical organization Doctors Without Borders, predicts that the actual number is drastically higher.

“We have a history of 30 years of civil war which has not been solved,” says Mayra Rodas, psychological coordinator of Doctors Without Borders in Guatemala. The ones who suffer most from this violence are women.

“We live in a machismo and patriarchal society. Women are treated as objects which can be taken. To be a woman here is like being garbage. This is what our patients tell us," Rodas said.

The PBS NewsHour global health team recently returned from Guatemala reporting on the femicide crisis and violence against women. The Guatemala Human Rights Commission estimated that in 2008, over 700 women were violently murdered. Norma Cruz, director of the Survivors Foundation commented that women in Guatemala are afraid to report abuses by spouses or others since the perpetrators often are not punished and the women can be further victimized.

Organizations train men to prevent violence against women

International organizations such as Amnesty International, Human Rights First and the United Nations have encouraged the Guatemalan government to adopt laws that will protect women. In April 2008, the “Femicide Law” was passed that outlawed violence against women.

Other organizations in many countries try to change the culture that allows such behavior. Through youth related services, public service campaigns and leadership training, the DC-based Men Can Stop Rape (MCSR) attempts to empower men to redefine masculinity as a tool to prevent men’s violence against women.

  1. Here's a simple answer to this: MURDER IS WRONG, NO MATTER WHO IS BEING KILLED. I love culture, culture is great. I understand that the whole "machismo" thing is a big part of their culture. But this is taking it way too far. And the worst part about it is not that these women are being killed - and that is pretty bad - but the worst part is that the killers are, to an extent, getting away with it! Guatemala needs to step up their game and take action.

When has rape been masculine. These foreign countries may have different views on this than I and the rest of the civilized world, but their still wrong. Women have rights too. What was unclear though is why the U.S. helped Guatemala? There has to be something we don't know.

This happens pretty much everywhere else in the world. Yes, it should be stopped, but who's really trying to stop it? No one. There will always be more important things for people to fix, and this will keep going on in Guatemala as other things like this have in the past.

I think this is very sad. In the past it has been known that men have controlled societies and the women have been on the bottom. But in this modern day society it would however seem like this idea has been demolished. Sadly it has not. I truly feel sorry for the women who must suffer on a day to day basis of getting raped and hurt. I also think that it isn't really America's fault for backing up Guatemala. The U.S. had no idea of these conditions in Guatemala at the time. And last I am very astonished that 93 percent of these acts of violence in Guatemala are caused by government official and political leaders. That’s very sad. The government is supposed to help you and make sure that no damage or pain is brought onto you. But this government was doing just the opposite.

Somebody needs to take action and bring this to an end because if nobody does, then it will keep on going on forever. Women should be treated like men and should have equal rights to them. Murder, rape, and harassment also go on in other parts of the world but in this area, it looks like it is going to be a huge problem.

  6. The way women are treated in Guatemala these days are horrible. It doesn’t make any sense that women; who are human beings are treated so unfairly. The women of Guatemala are facing cruel happenings and it’s sad that their country can’t support them against it. It all goes to show how much the United States take for granted, with so many women in higher power and positions these days we neglect to think of the women in other countries facing hard times.

To me, this is very disappointing. In a modern world like ours, where many countries are evolving and giving more women rights they deserve, a country like Guatemala is a shame. It sounds very harsh but it is true. We as United States have come so far that women can now vote and they are as equal as men. This is not the case in Guatemala where women are treated like garbage, as the article says. I feel sorry for all the women who get abused. They can't do anything about it because their own government won't do anything. They have no solution.

Yeah, you're cool, you can rape somebody and take away their freedom. This whole "macho" thing is stupid and it makes no sense. These things don't make you masculine they make you stupid because you think that they make you look masculine. This stuff in Guatemala has to stop, and that's the bottom line.

Masculinity is pretty much a lie in my eyes, I may have experienced brain damage to think so but I do not believe people are naturally anything. A person is going to live a certain way if society dictates it and expects it from your birth. For example, many would believe women are born motherly, with this mindset of course an entire gender is going to act motherly, because it is what they are “supposed” to. I’m not saying woman shouldn’t act motherly, I’m just stating the fact that the way we act is always being dictated by expectations and gender roles. I also see how masculinity ties in with rape. The idea of masculinity does condition men to think of women as legitimate sexual prey and has an obligation to serve the man. These results may be specific to Guatemala but sexism is not, especially when ever one in three women will be rape victims.

First of all, I would like to state that what is happening in Guatemala is wrong. I understand that in different cultures there are different views on each gender. But having these women be killed and nothing be done about it is too far. The women that were abused even say that they are treated like garbage there. I take this personally because, since my mom is a flight attendant, she goes to Guatemala sometimes. Since she is a woman, I feel like she should be careful there because of what is happening. The worst thing about this is how women are being killed because they are women!

This is sad. In most countries, this is outlawed. It happens everywhere, but not to this extent. In addition, the people here can't even get help. The US shouldn't help their army, maybe even stop trade with the country if violence isn't stopped. The killing of human beings isn't a joke. And if I am not mistaken, wasn't almost the same thing happening in our nation a hundred-fifty years? Just with race. We solved our problems with war, and maybe thats what Guatemala needs. Maybe with its self, or maybe it needs an enemy to fight against.

I think that no matter the circumstances, no one should be abused or taken advantage of. I know thats it's impossible to have a perfect world, but there are some things that the people can to to help reinforce non-violence. I think that it is a good thing that there are being laws passed to stop the harassment and doctors without borders have come into the situation. But here in the U.S., we have women's shelters that female with bad experiences can go to. I wonder if there is that same opportunity there. And I'm sure most women being abused won't tell. I know people who have been in these kinds of situations, and being public about it sometimes makes it worse. I don't mean to look on the downside but in every relationship, someone is bound to get hurt. When one is being abused it will most likely gets worse. From what I see: if these Guatemalan women ask for help from an outside source, they get beaten by males. If they keep it a secret, the beatings just continue. It's sad to say so, but theres not much one can do.

  13. People have many other things to do rather than wasting time on such issues in Guatemala. As always this will be a hot topic for certain period of time and then will fade away forever. Women, from the beginning were supposed to be under men which entitled them less powerful. Men can take advantage of them anytime and anywhere as that is what the society has taught them since the development of a civilization. I think people in Guatemala must request for help from neighboring countries in such circumstances.

As a female, I think that physical abuse against women is the most despicable crime of all. A patriarchy does not serve as an excuse for men to deprive women of their human rights. It’s understandable that this was a part of their tradition, unfortunately. However, now human rights are what matter the most in civilized societies. I hope the women in Guatemala can be free and protected after these organizations spread and enforce the ideas of nonviolence.

It is extremely disappointing to know that women are being treated this way in the twenty first century. The feminine role in society has progressed far, but not far enough. Guatemala needs to accept women as equals to men. It is frightening to think that women are being murdered. Murder is wrong regardless whether women or men. I feel it’s wicked that women are treated like this. I feel sorry for the women in Guatemala. I feel sorry for the souls of women lost in murders due to gender roles. The women have no control over this. Their government is unwilling to help. Someone needs to put a stop to this otherwise it will never end.

This is completely wrong. I love learning about culture and embracing the different ways of life of different people; but it is absolutely shocking to hear things that are going on in other areas because of the culture. They say that the population of Guatemala is largely a patriarchal society. This is apart of there culture that women are considered lower, but is an outrage to hear the way women are being treated. No one deserves to be put through any sort of violence for any reason. Race, gender, background or attitude it should not be applicable to anyone. Knowing that in America I am completely safe at home typing on my computer about some other countries problems is strange, because now I know that somewhere else two women have died because they are accepted differently in their society. To know that here we can have female presidents; women are able to do anything, but there they are "garbage". It’s not right. They have the audacity to call themselves men for the horrid things they do.

Wow Guatemala good job on keeping up your image. The world just loves to know you guys out there in that country treat your women like trash instead of people who have just as much chance as you over masculine loafers. I don't think it's right for this to continue. Instead of the U.S. giving them military support to help a war how about we give them support to stop all the guys from killing innocent women. Murder is murder though man or woman and either way it's just wrong. Sometimes people just don't think and in this case I do not salute you Guatemala for being sexist and homicidal.

  19. In this culture it has been socially acceptable to mistreat women in this way. As Lloyd said, and I whole heartedly agree with, society dictates what you are going to be from birth, how different all of our views might be if we had been born in say Detroit, or Guatemala, or Mars. Your environment and culture has a strong impact on who and what you are. You may argue genetics with me, and I will agree, some of your personality is dictated by genetics, such as the kind of clothes you wear, or the kind of music you enjoy (although genetics did nothing for me in the way of music choice, I'm still unique in that area). But I'm talking about outlook and the way you look at things. Even the Spanish language, which has a totally different structure from English, will have an effect on the way you look at things. So many things would be different. So this shows that these men have been shaped to think that mistreating women is right. This is mostly in part to machismo which has been used and glorified by many writers such as Ernest Hemingway. The attitude that these men have developed is wrong and should be corrected, but there is no optimism here because there is nothing that can correct the attitudes of these already grown men anything taught at school can quickly be demolished by the father at home as a father teaches by example and sons are quick to imitate. Sorry for no optimism this is just something law enforcement is going to have to enforce the death penalty on. Rape or murder of women = life in prison or death. And thats just how its going to have to be until men get it.

Even I admit that these forms of violence are too insane and immoral to be conducted throughout a country by men. It may just be me, but I think the U.S. should just stop throwing in new leaders and ways to control territories as these issues of violence and abuse arise from the government's interaction with these nations. If these macho men were taught to be like the people they are now, I think we should abandon any ideas of teaching people as so. Anyway, I can only feel pity for the people who suffer in such a country, and be thankful for the protection I receive from this country. If only the same could be done in countries like Guatemala, but of course this "legacy" of violence could hardly be over. Hopefully, these recent programs to outlaw rape and murder will work. Otherwise, we may have to deal with this issue for quite a while.

I do think that gender roles need to be redefined for countries like this. Too many countries let men roam around and do whatever they wan while the women suffer. While it is terrible that women and girls are being abused in such fashions, it is very rooted in South American culture (in some parts), and can only be stopped once the other forms of violence discontinue. The governments right now need to change their ways (bribes, corruption), and try and stop all of this violence. Things are starting to turn with people getting tired of corruption (like Egypt), but the government needs to take action otherwise things like this will get out of hand.

I understand people in Guatemala, well the men, want to show their "machismo" because it's part of their culture but the way they're deciding to show their culture is WRONG. Point blank.
It's inhumane. If you're a guy and you killed a woman, what does that show? Does it gain you respect? Definitely not. It would most likely just take it away from you. Its better to show how powerful and strong you are by protecting a girl from danger. Not being the danger that she has to hide from. Even other men won't have a positive outlook towards you after you commit a femicide. Its ddefinitely not worth it either.

Even more so is the the injustice being delt to women in Guatemala. This machismo culture needs to go. Women are NOT property. Women are NOT trash. Women DESERVE better. I wonder what their reasons are for abusing women. Of course it's wrong to abuse women, I just can not see how or why they do it. Even after looking at this many different ways, I just can't even begin to think of any halfway decent cause to act as they do to women. I believe it is true what Lloyd and Joshua have said that society dictates who you are. I also believe who you become relates on what kind of people are in your family. All it would take to make a drastic change, is one person in disagreement with what is going on. They can pass it on to their children, and the children to their friends, and the friends to their families, and in one generation, the entire country would be different.

  58. This displays the violence of the cartels. Killing and abusing innocent women that have not done anything to hurt them. This displays the fact that these men are monsters not humans. Why abuse people, especial women, who most likely have not done anything what so ever to harm you? This problem will continue to occur because these men just want money and they will do anything necessary to receive it. They do not have hearts like normal people do. Violence is in the genes so; the thing is that crime in this region will continue to soar no matter what we do about it.

The women are being treated as if they are nothing and are abused every day, because men think they are better than them. The fact that the government doesn't do anything about it shows that they don't really care about the women. To me it means that the government is filled with people that also think that it is okay to abuse and murder women. I think this is true crime. How can they treat women this way? Can't they understand that women suffer too much already? Having them be a women and still have to go through much worse in this country is very sad. People are probably thinking... "Man, it sucks to be a women if this is how they treat you", and its true. The women here are treated like garbage. The men don't take into account that they need women, and that without us, they can't do anything for themselves. I think this is a very delicate matter, and that we should try to do something to stop this. It is said, and it has been proven that women can do the things that men can just as well, or even better. Why can't they realize that the women should be valued? They should be considered "A great Jewl", because women can sure be better off without men. They can do the same jobs and in some cases women are just smarter and better than men.

Although I think that it is wrong, it's not the rest of the world's decision. The only people who can make changes is the Guatemalan government. The rest of the world can try to help, but it's their country, it's their culture, and if it's something they strongly believe in then it will probably keep happening. Laws can be made, but that doesn't mean they will necessarily be followed. Like back in the day, blacks gained equal rights, but the police didn't enforce them all the time; if anything the police were adding to the problem. I could see the same thing happening there, but with women.

I now understand why Guatemala has a lot of women dying but it isn’t fair for them even if they did do something wrong. Women are supposed to be cared and protected for not killed because of the lack of protection. In Guatemala, “women do not have the right to own property and are often neglected by police and the legal system.” In Guatemala “to be a women [there] is like being garbage.” It is good that now days people are trying to make a change to this but I think this needs to end completely. This is not the case in Guatemala. I do not understand why the government is not able to handle this problem. Mistreating women for culture is just inhuman. In a world where we learn that men and women should be equal, men are harming women freely and there is no action taken. This is a great disappointment and I cannot express how much anger I feel towards the government of Guatemala. There is no excuse for being unable to resolve this problem. Therefore, Guatemala needs to take care of it, or else there will be several issues around the world. If Guatemala does not want to take care of this problem, several other countries will be willing to fight for the women and humanity. One way they decided to help with this issue in Guatemala is to pass the Femicide Law that outlaw violence against women. They also have an organization called Men Can Stop Rape that is to prevent men's violence against women. I feel sad for the women in countries like this because the government does nothing about it unlike the U.S. The U.S has programs that help victims to recover from their traumatized experiences. The U.S also investigate to find the perpetrator who done a vile thing. I just wonder how does it show their masculine side because it just shows their insecure side.

Even though there have been positive outcomes from new work, there has been a lot of struggle in starting the business. Even after getting a substantial network running, there is much controversy about the actions done with these new jobs. The desire for a higher respect toward women is going to be a similar process, but much more difficult since these are people and not just computers and telephones that we are bringing society's respect to. Especially in a place that is not even close to the advanced country of the U.S. It is great that a stand is finally being taken, but it isn't going to be sugar, spice, and everything nice.
