NASA Outsourcing Space Flight
Associated Press
SETH BORENSTEIN, AP Science Writer
HOUSTON (AP) — How America gets people and stuff into orbit is about to be outsourced in an out-of-this-world way.
With the space shuttle's retirement Thursday, no longer will flying people and cargo up to the International Space Station be a government program where costs balloon. NASA is turning to private industry with fixed prices, contracts and profit margins. The space agency will be the customer, not the boss.
At least when it comes to the routine part of going to and from the space station, NASA hopes to rely on companies that will be the space version of FedEx and Yellow Cab.
The company that has been leading the commercial space race is hoping to launch its privately built rocket and capsule to the space station late this year. It won't carry astronauts, but if all goes well the unmanned ship will dock with the station and deliver food, water and clothing. And its major private cargo competitor may only be a month or two on its heels.
Getting people to orbit on a new American ship is a different story. Some ambitious companies hope to launch astronauts that way in three years, maybe four. Until then, the Russians will fly astronauts on a pay-for-play basis. Some space veterans like John Glenn, the first American in orbit, think five to 10 years is more realistic.
But two of the major players have surprised people before — the tech tycoons who founded PayPal and Amazon.
NASA has hired two companies — Space Exploration Technologies Corp. of Hawthorne, Calif., and Orbital Sciences of Dulles, Va. — to deliver 40 tons of supplies to the space station in 20 flights. The cost is $3.5 billion, about the same price per pound as it was during the space shuttle's 30-year history.
"It's time. Once NASA blazes the trail, creates the technology and it's available for private companies to take advantage of, this is the time" for the private firms to take over, said NASA commercial cargo chief Alan Lindenmoyer.
NASA met on Wednesday with companies wanting to taxi astronauts to the station. The agency hopes the money it saves by not flying the shuttle can be spent on new deep-space missions that will send astronauts to an asteroid and on to Mars.
Six private companies are working with NASA to send ships to the space station — either unmanned cargo ships or eventually astronauts in crew capsules.
For well more than a decade, boosters of commercial space have said they are ready to take over the job of going into low-Earth orbit on their own nongovernment ships, but hadn't done it.
Now one has: Space Exploration Technologies, which often goes by the name SpaceX and is run by risk-embracing PayPal founder Elon Musk, launched his unmanned Dragon capsule into orbit last December. Now his company is lining up for the first private visit to the space station. The lower and upper stages of the rocket are at Cape Canaveral, Fla. The capsule is almost finished.
"What we want to do is get back into space as quickly as possible and as sustainably as possible," said former astronaut Garrett Reisman, who now runs SpaceX's "Dragon Rider" program.
And maybe a month or two later, Orbital hopes to have its first test flight to the station. First, it has to finish building its launch site at Wallops Island, Va., which should be done in just a few weeks. Then later this year it will have a test launch of its new rocket, the Taurus II, and finally it will use that new rocket to launch its capsule, Cygnus, to the space station, said company spokesman Barron Beneski.
"Just like a person hires FedEx to deliver a package across the country and you pay him 50 bucks, we're delivering a 2,000-kilogram package to space, a few hundred miles above Earth, for a fixed price," Beneski said.
Four companies are building spaceships to take astronauts to the space station on a pay-per-seat basis. They are all constructing ships that would be launched on top of private rockets.
SpaceX appears to be leading the pack. Right behind it is Boeing, a giant in aerospace, which hopes to launch astronauts using its capsule as early as 2014. A third company, Sierra Nevada Corp., is taking a different route, proposing a shuttle-like spaceplane instead of a capsule. It is hoping to launch around 2015. And Amazon's Jeff Bezos is heading a fourth company, Blue Origin, that is much more circumspect about its plans for a gumdrop-shaped ship.
A fifth company, United Launch Alliance, just signed an agreement with NASA. It hopes to get its Atlas V rockets eventually approved for use in launching humans. Normally, Atlas rockets are used to put satellites in orbit. SpaceX is building its own private rockets, the Falcon series.
The crew of the final shuttle flight, Atlantis, left on the space station a small U.S. flag that flew on the inaugural shuttle voyage in 1981. The flag is the prize for the first rocket maker that brings Americans back to the station on a mission launched from the U.S.
President Barack Obama described it last week as "a capture-the-flag moment here for commercial spaceflight."
For these companies, it's also about capturing the cash. NASA will soon be paying the Russians about $63 million for each U.S. astronaut who flies on that country's Soyuz rocket to the space station.
Boeing's Jon Elbon, manager of the CST-100, which is what the company is calling its ship, said Boeing's prices will be competitive with what the Russians are charging. Boeing is also working with Bigelow Aerospace on bringing paying tourists up to a potential private space hotel.
Musk, who also started an electric sports car company and hopes to someday send his rockets to the Mars and fly families for $1 million for one-way tickets, promises to undercut the Russians' price substantially.
For all the talk of launching soon, George Abbey, former director of NASA's Johnson Space Center, remains skeptical: "I'm not sure it will happen anytime soon."
Former astronaut Glenn likes the idea; he just doesn't think it will happen as quickly as the companies do.
"To me that's not all bad," he said. "The government has always stepped out and done the things that private industry wouldn't or couldn't do" and then let companies run it when it is more affordable. He pointed to the Pentagon-inspired Internet.
NASA is hoping these companies are ready.
Just minutes after Atlantis lifted off on the final space shuttle mission, NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs turned to his counterpart from SpaceX and told him, "It's your turn now."

To be honest, it was sad when such a successful program like the Space Shuttle Program shut down. Many people grew up with the program and now it is closed. Now it's time to move on. I think it was a smart decision so they could save up for even bigger and better missions. In 30 or so years when the new program is launched, it's probably going to be even more astonishing than the one that recently shut down. So yeah, definitely a smart move on NASA's part.

Wow this is really amazing! Reading this, I was just shocked at how fast technology is expanding. Just 3 decades ago the buzz was the space race, sending a man to the moon. Now, we're talking about sending people to live in space. At first, the idea seemed sort of crazy because sure space is cool and all, but to live in space seems farfetched. What's really cool is the fact that NASA will be paying the Russians for each U.S. astronaut that rides the Soyuz rocket up to the space station. They are correct to compare this new exciting way of space travel to FedEx. NASA wants to save money by not launching the shuttle all the time, so NASA depends on other private companies with their own rockets to bring astronauts and supplies up to space.

The fact that NASA is becoming its own company isn’t that great. There are other companies trying to make commercial space flight as well, and the U.S. government needs a space division, and I don’t get why NASA gives money to the Russians. They probably won’t get to commercial space flight in a few years anyway. They think it’s going to be so easy, but they don’t understand that no one will pay a million dollars to go on an unsafe ship. I really like Obama’s metaphor for all this, “a capture-the-flag moment here for commercial spaceflight." It’s really funny for me since I play capture the flag in videogames. I hope in the future commercial space flight won’t be so special, so it will be cheap.

I'm completely against space travel for citizens. I believe if your a trained astronaut then ONLY then you should travel the space. Being a astronaut and going up into space should be (in my opinion) something you should get by sincere hard work, dedication and love for space. I'm really disappointed that private companies are preparing for space travel for any normal citizen with enough money to buy a ticket.

I think it is very unfortunate that NASA has lost so much money. That we can’t even send our own astronauts into space because we can’t afford it or because the shuttles are not ready. I think it is an amazing idea if we could send families up into space for a week but the idea at this moment seems unrealistic. Even though we can’t afford to send any of the astronauts up into space you can tell from the story that they are still very determined. But with the help and support of the 5 companies we should be able to get back up into space.

The most fascinating article I've read to this day. Interesting that NASA wants a system like FedEx, gaining money from chores the customers are requesting. But I really wonder what changed their mind from getting free funds from the government to getting the funds for research from the customer's needs of delivering in space. Has technology gotten that great with unmanned spaceship or capsules? If this turns out to work as intended, they have something great going in the hands of the NASA faculty members.

First, I love getting to know more about outer space and NASA. Two of my older brothers actually work at Jacobs Engineering and Science contract Group that provides engineering and science service for NASA. I thought NASA was shutting down. However, it is just putting to rest its space shuttle program after 30 years of operation. After 30 years, the idea of NASA being a customer instead of its own boss must be weird for the people working for the company, but change can be a good thing sometimes. Although it may not be good, at least the international space station can still be reached with Russian spacecrafts or private industries such as SpaceX. For me I do not know which side to take for the different opinions shared about the timing of when launches will begin; but I am leaning more toward George Abbey’s skeptical thinking.

I think that NASA not being a government supported program is really sad. Now to go to the space station, astronauts have to pay a lot of money to hitch a ride with Russians. Since many private companies have bought NASA, they have to make their own rockets and ships. They are even thinking of building hotels in space and giving million dollar family trips. I think it would be really different living in space, but I do not think I can cope with space food. All of the rockets can only be launched in about five years. Until then, we will have to share seats with the Russians.

I think that it is unbelievable how the US government can spend billions of dollars a week for the military and defense, when they cannot even set aside a small fund for NASA. Space exploration is an extremely important part of our country's development, and without it, we are bound only to our home planet. I don't believe that NASA should be turned into a private company, it is too important.

I think these are some very interesting facts about the future spaceflight, and that NASA will soon be paying the Russians $63 million for each U.S. astronaut who flies in Russia. CST-100 owned by Jon Elbon also wants astronauts to fly at their station. Jon Elbon is working with Bigelow Aerospace on bringing paying tourists to a private space school. Competition I see.

This step of commercial flying to space is a big step, just like the first man walking on the moon. Just imagine middle class affording to get to space in 10-15 years from now, and imagine 25 years from now we could live in space. This is a sad moment for Nasa , as the government isn't paying them anymore. But its also a good thing, because now Nasa rely on companies, which could sell seats to go to space. This is a great opportunity for people to explore beyond their planet. But this process will take awhile ,as of right now they are more focused on shipping cargo instead of people. This 5-10 years of studying and testing might be tedious ,but for regular people to get to space makes it worth while.

I think it is good that the government stopped funding NASA because now the national debt will stop increasing. Another benefactor is that NASA will be able to be more successful because they will get a wide variety of ideas of space travel from the companies that will own it. Now that NASA has canceled its previous mission, it will be able to do more with families going up into space. Until NASA gets enough money to do so, astronauts will now be paying the Russians for a ride. This may cost a lot of money, but it will allow us to expand space exploration and knowledge for the future. This is a good idea.

I hate the idea of not having our own Space Shuttle Program being sent to space. It's sad knowing that after being so successful for thirty years, it has to be put on pause because our government won't set aside money for them. I am also disappointed that now we have to pay Russia to continue space study in the US. I completely agree with Amanda. I think that only trained astronauts should be able to go into space. Space expolration is extremely important, but it's not for the people who are wealthy enough to pay to get there. If people were meant to live somewhere other than Earth, you'd think that someone would be there already.

I believe NASA made the right decision to support private companies in space exploration. Sure, it's sad that they,NASA, got shut down but in a few years or so, more space exploration will go underway. NASA blazed the trail for a new age of space travel one that will probably be far superior than the original with new technology making remarkable things happen.

The thought of NASA being turned into a private company is pretty sad considering the fact that they have contributed to human knowledge greatly. Not only did they contribute, they did it very quickly. It still shocks me that people are already talking about sending citizens to space!

In my own opinion, I'm glad that America's leading space program once again is planning large, innovative projects. I also believe that it was a good idea to switch to private companies for funding. If the government pays for NASA, all it will do is further damage the economy. I also think that this new space race will be competitive, as well, to see who will be able to be the main contributor for NASA. Businesses will be doing anything they can to be able to get a spot in this extremely important company.

We have finally stepped our feet into the Star Wars stage of life where space travel is common for everyday people. I think this is a great start to something big. Just as Bob Jacobs told Space-X “It’s your turn now.” I really believe that this going to open up a new window of opportunity to wonder out into space maybe into the next 10 or so years. Although it is sad that the Space Station is no longer in affect, the different companies are now working continuously to try to put the floating hotels to open. I look forward to the future hotel, and maybe if I’m lucky, I can also go aboard the capsule to take a look into the galaxy.
I think it's smart for them to shut it down for a while, but still get all the technology and information for other projects so they can make those happen later on in the years. Other companies are working on so much already too. But it is also disappointing that all those astronauts that have been training might not be able to go, and only a few will then go with Russia. It's sad that our Space shuttle had to be shut down and we have to go with Russia. Technology has expanded rapidly; I cannot believe that there already talking about sending families up there to stay in a hotel in space! I can't imagine what will happen in the next 5 decades.

I think that it's quite unfortunate how NASA is losing their money, so I think it was smart to resolve to private funding. I think it's really great that they are coming up with great ideas for the future. However, I disagree with their plan to send normal people out into space. I don't think that it's right to send unqualified, inexperienced, regular ctizens out into space. Many things can go wrong and it might put people at risk. Though NASA is proving their progressing technology, they should really reconsider some of their ideas.

This is very big news! The fact that NASA is now it's own company is not that cool though. Now it will probably just slow it down a bit due to them having some strict budgets and such. And it seems very dangerous to let your everyday citizens go into space. Astronauts go through some pretty intense training to do things like that, so it like we are just sort of undermining all of their efforts.

I think it is sad that NASA is losing their funding from the government. NASA has discovered many new things, and will continue discovering things because of personal funding. Though I still want U.S. astronauts to go to the International Space Station, $63 million is quite a large number to send one astronaut into space with the Russians on their shuttle. Many companies have put faith in the idea that by 2014 we will have the technology to fly tourists into space, but I am skeptical of this idea of paying to go into outerspace within the next few years.

When the Space Shuttle Program closed, a piece of everyone was gone. I was surprised to hear that the Russians would be paid $63 million dollars for each U.S. astronaut who flies in Russia. NASA being a company has its peaks and pits, but we will just have to see how it works out. NASA should have a small fund for things they need. Training for this job is intense, but I know dedicated people can make it happen.

This is a surprising story for me because now NASA has completely changed it's perspective. They now want to send people using a Russian rocket named Soyuz, which will cost America $63 million per U.S. astronaut, which is really just a waste of the money that America has. Some of the companies are thinking that they can get their rockets ready to go in a few years, but to be realistic, anything could happen, and the odds are against them. Also, companies might end up losing money because most people wouldn't want to waste about a million dollars just to live in space, especially because it is a lot different. So I would expect that few people actually do go into space, and that the rockets will be ready around 2015-2016.

I think that this a waste of money. NASA and the other companies should just collaborate and work on sending astronauts up to Mars, which actually has a purpose. We could instead learn if life truly did exist on Mars. This mission will be worthwhile and can give us insight into the past history of our galaxy. It would answer a question many people have been asking over time: are there other life forms out there besides us?

I have to agree with Amanda Shah this time, space traveling for citizens is a highly dangerous business and I would like a professional astronaut going out into space and knowing what they are doing! I am very sad that the program is going to be shut down, but I don't think citizens should be going into space. I've known about NASA ever since I was a little kid, everybody knows about it. It is heart breaking to hear that Nasa is losing their funding. This debacle of a space race tycoon is pure nonsense. Space travel was funded not for vacationing for the rich, it was meant to research our celestial neighbors. The previous space race had countries united in hopes of being the leader in space travel. Nearly half a century afterwards, we're thinking about vacations. how ridiculous! If this continues onwards, then NASA is redundant as now it's to see who can get to the space station first by private companies. They say "the sky's the limit," in this case, let's keep it like that.

I'm glad that government has decided to cut all spending for NASA. As important and fascinating space travel is, we have alot of issues in the U.S and in general on Earth that we need to take care of. I agree with the solution of private firms sponsoring voyages, because it benefits both parties. However, I don't fully agree about the idea of space ships letting any average person with money go to space. Then it would be something only rich people could do.

I think this is too risky. Nasa should instead focus on topics that will give us better understanidngs of our universe. We don't know too much about ourselves and some other planets, including Mars and all the other outer planets. We need to know more about our surroundings before we send untrained people up to space.

Although I've never really payed much attention for space, astronauts, or anything beyond our atmosphere,I find it a little disappointing that NASA will no longer be funded. It is a unique icon that we, as Texans, were proud to share with visitors from all over the world. However, I am strongly against the idea of letting the "upper class" take vacations in space. Is planet Earth not interesting enough? Not only would the costs and risks of these trips be enormous, I feel as though the trend of space travel would end very quickly. There is really nothing to do up there and sooner or later the customers would stop paying for it, resulting in a massive waste of money and effort for the building of these "ships" to the moon. Space travel should only be used for a scientific purpose, because it's for the better of mankind. The question that inspired scientists to progress this far was "what is up there?" not "how much can money be earned from it?"

I think that outsourcing is a cost effective means of controlling the high cost of space travel. The business industry has been using this method for a long time already. When there are multiple private companies competing for your business, the customer (NASA) will get the benefits of lower costs of the project, no maintnence and no health benefits to give out to employees. It's a win-win situation. However, comparing NASA to FedEx is a little too simplistic. I think there may be a lot more complex details to deal with when you are transporting tons of equipment and people into orbit.

It was disappointing to hear that the space shuttle program was going to be shut down. Especially growing up in south Texas where NASA is really something to be proud of. I always watched the takeoffs and landing, and I really enjoyed seeing the rockets leave. However, it is very interesting to hear about all the technological advances coming from different private companies. The idea of tourism in outer space is very fascinating, and I think it was the right move on NASA'S part to start seeking private contractors. They are being forced to change and adapt to a new era of space exploration. It is scary to some to think that private companies are operating out in space. So, this will become a whole new chapter in our history.

I believe that NASA has overdone it this time. NASA should just be focusing on figuring out how the universe started and how the planets were made, instead of thinking about setting up families on planets. This idea shouldn't even be released to the public because it is a dumb idea. I believe that this idea isn't good because NASA is sending innocent, untrained families up into space without first testing it with a simulation.

Wow, I didn’t even know there were people living in space. It really makes me realize how advanced our technology is. To think that the government is no longer funding the space shuttle, forcing it to become a private industry is something I wouldn’t have expected. I've heard people claim that privatizing NASA is a good thing, and I agree. When you think about it, it decreases the national spending and debt while still keeping the program to be run by private companies. Also, isn't that what America is all about? Isn't the point of America that business is run by companies, and politics is run by government? With so much money to spend on space travel, and so much to be made off of it, the government owning it is borderline socialism.

It initially came as somewhat of a surprise to me that the government would be handing over such a huge task after so many years. When you think about it, it's been the tax payers' money over the past 30 years that have supplied most of the funds for NASA's programs. Now that they are giving the power to private companies, I wonder what types of projects our money will be funding now.
On another note, I found it kind of interesting that big business people like the founders of PayPal and Amazon, things that regular people like us use regularly, are involved in big ways with these rising private space flight companies. Their ideas seem pretty wild as for what we have to look forward to in the future. Like John Glenn said, these things probably won't happen exactly when the companies predict, though. It should be interesting to see if normal citizens will be willing to pay $1 million for a one-way ticket into Space like Musk hopes.

I agree with Amanda on the fact that space travel should not be for citizens, and going into space should only be for astronauts who have done sincere hard work. However, I believe that since the NASA program is losing its funds, they are actually having a good idea to be getting the money with space travel. On the contrary, I do really believe that only astronauts should be the only ones to travel in space, not only because they deserve it but because it may be a lot more dangerous for any normal citizen to even attempt it. Other than the fact that citizens do not have the correct training I believe that they have the right idea with this.

It’s amazing how fast technology is changing. The fact that soon people will be able to travel up to space like we could travel on vacation is truly shocking. However, I agree with Amanda Shah, I don’t really think it’s necessary for any citizen that wants to, to be able to go on space travel. Only trained astronauts would have a legitimate reason to be traveling to space, to increase our knowledge and technology. Also, I think the United States should have a space division, so the fact that NASA is becoming its own company isn’t that great either.

It is unfortunate that NASA is no longer a government program. However, I think cutting NASA's spending was a smart idea. The money that the government was giving to NASA can be used for more important needs. On the other hand, I think it is good NASA is becoming a private company; but, I don't think they will be highly profitable. Also, I agree with former astronaut John Glenn, it will take at least 5 years to the space program comes back around.

I think NASA's plan of becoming a private company both has its benefits and disadvantage. First of all, this would mean they'll try, by all means, to improve their technology for the future, but on the other hand, the idea of letting "citizens," with no experience, do the job instead of astronaut is a risky idea. Just sending citizens to space is dangerous because space is like a mystery. Secondly,it's good that they're figuring out a way for people to live in space, but that's only with people who has the money to do so. This is only targeted for the rich; not like us who can't afford to spend a millions of dollars.I know NASA's is trying to save up money by depending of other private company for their exploration, but still, I think they're doing this for the rich for their own benefit.

It’s very sad that the government has stopped paying for NASA, but I see why they did it. We need the money down here on Earth. There are many problems that have to be solved in the U.S., but we don’t have much money to fix them. If the government stops sponsoring NASA, then we will have some more money to spend on other things. Fortunately, there are other companies that want to travel to space, so we can still learn about space and maybe in a few years, we can even take a vacation there.

I believe NASA is doing something that could put us into more debt. 63 million dollars per person is a lot of money. Also, another company plans to send citizens to space for one million dollars. That is a lot of money for a one way trip, considering that not many people have that much money to spend. Companies might end up losing money because most people wouldn't want to waste their money just to live in an environment that they don’t know a lot about. I think it is dangerous to let citizens with no experience to fly into an environment that they don’t know a lot about. Astronauts go through intense training to do things so it like we are sort of discouraging them.

I think that NASA should have never "shut down" in the first place. Everybody was amazed at what NASA was going to do next. In my opinion, I really do not like this idea of new space voyages made bby citizens. I think we should just leave it up to the trained astronauts to explore space. NASA has and always will be a part of our history. It is just as important as the military, so why can't the government fund both the military and NASA.

I think its great how NASA turned into a private funding company. But it is unfortunate how they are losing money from the government. Even though it is mournful that NASA has been shut down, it’s still incredible that they are becoming a private company. It’s better than not even contributing to the space program. However, like many people have said already, I don’t agree with the idea of sending ordinary people to space. It requires an aspiring astronaut to undergo a lot of training before going into space. Prosperous people shouldn’t just be given a trip to space because they have enough money to pay for the trip. Yes, it’d be cool to go, but there are other people who have a love for space. They took their time and effort to become an astronaut, not just money. I personally think that NASA should focus on getting the ambitious astronauts into space instead of the curious people.

NASA shows how much we can do, and I am glad of how much progress we have came through the past years. It is unfortunate that NASA is cut by the government funds, but you have to understand how the governments are suffering because of financial problems like debt. It seems unrealistic to keep up a program like NASA, but I do think that they should rely on the companies that help them supply their needs for traveling into space. It also sounds unrealistic to send inexperienced humans to space. I think NASA and other programs focus on what they can do and what they can’t.

Technology has grown throughout the years. About 30 years ago, people talked about how a man was going to the moon and now we are thinking to send inexperienced people to space. Even though NASA has given the scientific community a lot of information, I think is time to move on. It is upsetting to hear that the government will no longer continue to fund for NASA, but change is good. We cannot stick with the same thing all the time. The only thing that bothered me was sending people that were not astronauts to space. It is a bit risky, but if NASA is willing to put up the money, then it is their choice.

I believe that NASA in putting innocent people in danger by sending to space without giving them any training. NASA should be focusing on how planets were formed and how to enhance everyday life. Space travel should only be for people who have trained hard to get a space license (of some sort). It's sad how commercial space companies can give away travel tickets to space to anyone who can afford it.

Although I do still feel that NASA and nationally funded space exploration were a big part of who we are as a country, I can also relate to the economic benefits of closing the program. I also would like to point out how foreign the idea of a space hotel and flying to Mars must seem to our elders, especially our grandparents, because when they were our age some of them didn't even believe the lunar landing was legitimate, and now we have the International Space Station! This article was very interesting to me. I knew that couldn't have been the end of space flight. Now its other compaines turn for space flight. My hypothesis is that SpaceX and Orbital Science will be even larger compaines in the future then they are now. Space compaines are costing billions of dollars in government money, which is probaly why the economy is messed up now. NASA paying Russia 63 million dollars for each american astronaut that that flies on their rocket, that is very outrageous. To me this article is talking about making money with space industies, but that's just my opinion.

It's unfair for the astronauts that they took so many years in training and preparation to go to space some day, and then after all there hard work some rich person can just buy a ticket without any training. At the same time it was smart for NASA to not send anymore ships so that they could save money for future projects. I understand that right now the US needs all the money we can get but with creating jobs you can make money. I also do not agree with how people that are not astronauts are allowed to go up into space as long as they can pay for it. I find that dangerous, unfair and if something bad happened to the person their family might want to sue NASA. Well, I'm not quite sure whether giving all of these private corporations access to space is such a good idea. The companies that can afford to develop in space are, generally, super wealthy. This leaves smaller companies that remain on earth to kind of wither and die. Extending capitalism into space really doesn’t seem like a good idea to me. The first big problem is, once you let these companies travel into space, they will start to develop colonies and such. The countries on earth would have no way to control what would happen on these colonies, essentially instating the companies to govern the colonies. The only thing privatizing space does is support the bourgeoisie.

When I read this article, it kind of upset me because I wish the Space Shuttle Program didn’t shut down. Many people remember a lot of things about space and NASA from when they were growing up, but now it’s closed. I like the idea of saving money and waiting longer to go back into space so we have more to offer to all of the discoveries that will most likely happen. Now when they were talking about people living in space, I thought they were getting a little ahead of themselves. Right now that doesn’t seem too reasonable for all the circumstances we are facing like money, harming the astronauts, etc. One thing that made me happy was that the United States was going to pay for some of our astronauts to go into space with the Russians. I’m happy to hear that The United States will still be contributing to all of the Space Programs.

Wow, what a shock that NASA’s shuttle program is finally ending. This to me is really a sad thing; because, I’ve seen all the shuttles that have launched in my life time. I wonder if I will ever see another American rocket launched, my guess is it might be a very long time. I really disagree that we now have to send our astronauts on a Russian spacecraft to go in to space. I believe that Americans need to send our own people into space, not send our astronauts on a different country’s space rocket. I also like that Boeing and the other companies are making future spacecraft’s for Americans. I would love to go into space as a tourist. With space travel becoming privatized, maybe someday we will have a huge colony on the moon or other space stations that are like cities, and private shuttles could bring us to and from these places.
