Inventor Seeks to Bring Solar Light Bulbs to the Poor

Inventor Seeks to Bring Solar Light Bulbs to the Poor

Bringing solar light bulbs to the world
By Jim Spellman, CNN

Denver (CNN) -- It started with such a simple concept: A solar light bulb that charges up during the day and lights the night when the sun sets.

Inventor Steve Katsaros perfected his design in June 2010, and four days later he had a patent in hand.

He knew it was a good product, but he didn't know what to do with it.

"It wasn't until after we created it that we asked ourselves, 'How do we market this,'" Katsaros says. "And we learned that the largest market was the developing world."

As Katsaros began researching markets in developing countries, he began to realize that his solar light bulb could potentially make a huge impact on the 1.4 billion people around the world who don't have access to an electrical grid.

Many use fuel lamps that burn kerosene, which is costly, dirty and can also be unhealthy.

He dubbed his company Nokero -- short for "No Kerosene" -- and set out to get his bulbs into as many hands a possible in the developing world.

First, Katsaros had to answer a key question that would determine how he would have the strongest impact: should his company be nonprofit, or for-profit?

Katsaros found inspiration from the 2008 book by Paul Polak, "Out of Poverty."

Polak, who has worked in developing nations for 30 years, believes that the charity model of aid used by nonprofit organizations doesn't work -- despite its good intentions.

The best way to help people, according to Polak, is to treat them as consumers. If you can sell to them, he says, you can help them.

"In the beginning I was a nut case and nobody paid attention," Polak says. "The consensus was 30 years ago that this is what caused poverty, and to be involved in business was outrageous and evil."

Today, that is starting to change, he says. But that doesn't mean that nongovernmental organizations have rolled out the red carpet for Polak's ideas.

"Many NGOs say it's making money on the back of the poor, but I love to make money on the back of the poor," Polak says.

"You can feel really good about yourself giving stuff away ... but if you are going to sell things to people, you need to have respect for them because no one is going to buy something if you have contempt for them."

He says market forces will ensure that the right products get into the marketplace and ultimately lead to empowering people in developing countries to be better able to fend for themselves.

"If you have a village that's used to the dole, it's very hard to get them off of the dole," Polak says. "We have to face the fact that conventional development aid has failed.

"It just doesn't work."

After interviewing more than 3,000 families who live on $3 a day or less, Polak concluded that they know best how to care for their families.

They will respond to a free market that presents them with products that will fit their needs, he says.

"They are stubborn creative survival entrepreneurs," Polak says. "They make life and death decisions about how to spend their meager income. They are used to investing their money very wisely."

In 1981 he founded International Development Enterprises. Though the company itself is a nonprofit, it uses a model called "social entrepreneurship," which utilizes capitalist principles to assist people in the developing world.

So often, he says, large aid organizations simply don't understand what people need.

Polack points to the example of a product called the Play Pump. It seems like a great idea: A children's merry-go-round operates as a water pump. As children play on it, it pumps water into a holding tank.

In 2006, the United States invested more than $16 million in a massive effort to install Play Pumps across sub-Saharan Africa. Four years later, 4,000 Play Pumps had been installed.

But according to a UNICEF report the Play Pumps haven't worked as promised.

At $14,000 each they are expensive. And the children grew bored of the hard work of "playing" on the merry-go-rounds, forcing women in the village to operate the pumps. In addition, the pumps proved to be unreliable, and when they break they require expert technicians to repair them, according to UNICEF.

Polak says this is exactly the wrong approach because the people living in the villages were not given an opportunity to choose whether these pumps would work in their communities.

"They're not going to spend their money on it if it doesn't make sense," Polak says. "The problem with a lot of these things using the charity model is that they get these things foisted on them."

Polak's nonprofit markets a pump of its own, which costs about $8 to make and sells for $25. Polak says a small family farmer who buys a pump can increase his annual income by $100.

He says they have sold 1.5 million in Bangladesh alone and have created thousands of jobs in turn.

"We have 3,000 (villages) dealers making an income and 3,000 well drillers making an income, and 75 workshops making the pumps making an income," Polak says.

And that is one of the key tenets of the social entrepreneurship model. It helps create more jobs and a network of dealers and distributors that can then be utilized to sell more products and ultimitely build a more robust economy in developing countries.

That's a model Katsaros hopes to replicate with his solar light bulbs.

"This is something I personally believe in, to create smaller entrepreneurs around the globe," he says. "It's a business model I really love and believe in."

So far, Nokero has mostly sold large orders to nonprofits and foreign governments, who sometimes give away the bulbs for humanitarian reasons. They aim to expand and build the business through social entrepreneurship.

In Kenya and Tanzania they sell what they call "business in a box kits," 144 bulbs along with displays and fliers.

Would-be entrepreneurs can go village-to-village selling the bulbs and establishing a network of customers.

In the future, Katsaros hope to use this budding network to distribute new solar products to further help people who live away from the power grid.

Being a for-profit company also allows Katsaros to keep working on new ideas without being tempted to move to a high paying corporate job.

"Yeah, we could cash out at some point, but there's really no reason for that," he says. "We have a healthy company, we have good people working, and we're improving the lives of a lot of people already. We're happy."

I think Katsaros helped many people by inventing the solar. My mom told me how hard it was for her to study at night when the lights went out. In India lights go out every night and it was hard for her to study with a lamp. It also fells good to help people in need and to give back to the community

I believe that the light bulbs were a "one hit wonder," explaining that he could "potentially make a huge impact on the 1.4 billion people around the world who don't have access to an electrical grid." I think that trying to make another world phenomenon like Play Pumps was a bad idea because of the faults like the children getting bored or needing a special technician for it. I also believe that Katsaros made a bad decision by making this company non profitable if it's such an amazing product.

I think that the solar light bulb is a very good idea. Katsaros is very hopeful in his brilliant idea. My opinion is that the solar light bulb will be a big success in our world. I hope that there will be more bright ideas like this one.

I believe Steve Katsaros' invention, the solar light bulb, is brilliant, so is his marketing plan. I agree with Paul Polak that you shouldn't just hand out products to countries or people in poverty. Poverty has made them very smart and wise with their money, so if they wouldn't spend what little money they have on a product that was thought to be good for them, then don't hand the product to them. Selling the product to them would be better because they would be getting what they know they need and not what someone thinks they need. An example is the merry-go-round water pump or the Play Pump. It was an invention that was handed to them and was thought to be good for them, but it made every thing much worse then before because only a high qualified professional could fix it when it frequently broke. This would be an invention that someone in poverty would not buy. I think Katsaros' plan of selling the solar light bulbs to would-be entrepreneurs is a great idea because it would give the would-be entrepreneur the ability to make more money. This is better than just handing them a horrible product.

I always thought nonprofit organizations had more of an impact on the poor. On the contrary, Polak is right .Things like the pump forced upon them by UNICEF does not help them .They did not even realize the long-term effect the play pumps had. Polak selling his pumps have reached a lot more people and in a shorter amount of time. Like stated in the article, these people know what will benefit them, and they know how to spend their money wisely even if it is not a lot. As for Katsaros, I like his Idea and I believe it will be efficient all over the globe. I should even suggest it to my dad. I like the way he puts his business idea. I think he will be very successful.

When I read this article, I was inspired. Katsaros and Polak had some great inventions to help the need. I thought the pump and the bulb were very clever ideas. When I read that they weren’t non-profit organizations and that Polak suggested to not make a non-profit organization, I thought he was crazy. Non-profit helps those in need even more because they don’t have to worry about paying for anything. Then when I kept reading, I understood a lot more on why he didn’t want a non-profit organization or why he didn’t suggest them. Polak has a great point, too. I am glad to hear that the light bulbs and pumps are helping several people in some way whether it’s making them, selling them, or even buying and using them. Most of the people in need deserve a little gadget that they could definitely make their life somewhat easier. I’m happy to hear that people out there are making this happen.

Katsaros must have been a happy man. A solar light bulb, something I thought could never happen. Just thinking about sunlight creating light, makes me feel that the world has endless possibilities as I know today. But there were decisions he had to make and none of them are wrong. Basically, he invented the solar light bulb for the people who don't have access to electricity. He's making a big difference for those people, and again, look at our lives, so elegant and the technology we have acquired. He feels like he's stuck between two boulders, not knowing what do do next. Should this light bulb be distributed for a non-profit item, or for profit. Instead, he gets help from a book called Out of Poverty, and finally decides for the company. He goes for profit, and I agree with him saying the money they gain can be used to create more solar products. Lets hope this solar topic will succeed.

I think Katsaros invention is very good, especially because the world is suffering from global warming and the lack of fossil fuels. We need a new energy source and solar energy is great. I think his decision on selling it to developing countries is a very good idea because many people do not live next to a power grid and the kerosene lamps are bad for their health. It is wise for him to think about which market would make his product successful. Many inventors make decisions right away and end up losing millions because their product did not sell in the right market. He also received good advice from Polak's book about marketing. I think Katsaros's product will be very successful.

Katsaros, to me, is one of the many people in this world that deserved to be congratulated for the hard work they have done. He thought of the other people and locations in this world that don't have access to normal electricity like we do. The villagers spent money on pumps that didn't work and had their hopes let down after believing their lifestyle could change. We Americans take advantage of these simple things we have that other countries would do anything to have. Like water, electricity, and a good economy. Now, since Katsaros invented these solar light bulbs all they need is the one thing everyone in this world has access to: the sun.

I think that making these bulbs and giving them to people in need is a good idea. Although, I think Steve Katsaros should do something like charity:water, which is a non-profit organization that gives water pumps by donation, having people set up accounts and getting their friends to donate. I think the idea of giving to the less fortunate is amazing, but I will admit that some quirks need to be fixed. For example, the water Play Pumps should be designed to be easier to maintain and more fun to play on. Other than that, giving solar light bulbs to undeveloped nations would have a great impact on their society and make things a lot easier for the citizens of the undeveloped country.

Polak is such a hero! Even though his business is for profit, it doesn't mean he's not helping anyone. Its great that someone out in the world doesn't have to use kerosene lamps, and I know how terrible they smell. Also with the $25 water pumps; they are drastically cheaper than the others that are turned into merry-go-rounds. I hope Polak goes and invents more inventions that can change more problems to those who really need his help.

After reading this amazing article, I feel so thankful to all the people out there that help others who don't have much. We should look up to Katsaros and Nokero because they do what's best for the country. In our time, people make unnecessary things, but they often forget about all the other different types things that people need in order to survive. Living in poverty may decrease the amount of freedom to use or to have the things people who are fortunate to use. Sometimes we all show-off our goods and our fortunate things, but we have to remember that there are allot of people who suffer from not having anything to live. But I'm proud to say that there are SOME people who care.

This is a great idea. Mr.Katsaros is helping change people's lives everywhere. I am happy to see that there are still some honest, good people like Steve Katsaros. It's so nice to see how people can work for the good of humanity instead of being greedy and choosing a for-profit organization. Even though Steve loses more money than he gains he still perseveres. On the other hand, cheap versions are also available at this time. Steve, in my opinion, has made his product too expensive considering that the product is 25 dollars for a single light bulb.

I think that having these solar-powered energy lights is a great idea, but even better that Steve Katsaros is giving them out to people in need. It really shows that there are some people in the world who don't do what they do just for the money. The Play Pump was a good idea too, but with these inventions, you have to make sure it will last. For example, the children got tired of the Play Pump and soon the women had to operate them, and also the cost of repairing it is expensive.

I think that Katsaros' invention is a brilliant idea. The solar light bulb can be very useful if you would need light in the dark, which most people need in the developing countries. I always thought that nonprofit organizations made more of an impact on those developing countries than making them buy what you want to sell to them. Polak is right; making people buy these kinds of materials stimulates the economy. I am glad that people like Katsaros are creating amazing inventions that will help out the economy and the world.

Even though Mr. Katsaros created a profit organization, it is benefiting more people. The process by which he distributes the bulbs is a great idea because if the people don’t want them, they are not forced to have them. When asking the people if they would like to have a product, Mr. Katsaros can tell if the product will sell. UNICEF has some very good points as to why the Play Pumps haven’t worked. With this different entrepreneurial strategy there are more jobs, people benefit from the invention, and there can be more beneficial inventions made.

To me Steve Katsaros is a package of a entrepreneur, genius, and kind person all rolled into one. He is a good business man who knows that putting 14000$ water pumps that depend on children keeping interest in them to get water is a bad idea and helps by making a cheaper better version that sounds much simpler and better then the older pumps. He also thought that many areas on earth do not have reliable power grids and many people can't afford to replace light bulbs so he made a solar powered light bulb that is reliable and cheap. lastly he is for profit which means he can have low prices people can afford and make money making the chances of going out of business far slimmer.

I like how the pumps Katsaros’ company makes can be made by the villagers in a factory so they can have jobs, and other villagers can sell them so they can have jobs too. I love the idea of the solar powered light bulb, but to be honest I believe there is no harm in taking profits from those who do not have a very high income. The only way people get what they want is by working hard and earning it. I kind of agree with Polak when he says that we should take a profit out of it no matter what but I disagree with him when he says that nonprofit organizations do not work because there are nonprofit companies that have become successful. If you are expecting a profit out of your product then maybe you should make a price that is suitable for all people and include deals with that offer such as buy 5 get 2 free or something similar to that.

This article made me realize that just giving things to 3rd world countries will not really help unless they really want or need it. Just take a look at the "merry-go-round" machine. It worked fine at first. But combined with the gradual monotony of playing on it and the fact that it required repairs, it ended up becoming more of a hindrance than an actual benefit. Katsaros, however, is doing the right thing. He is selling his product for a price, but he does that so that 3rd world civilians will be able to decide whether or not to spend their hard earned money on it. This allows both sides of the trade to be happy. Katsaros gets money while these civilians get the resources they need.

I have never thought of it that way, but I totally agree with him when he says that we should sell to them rather than give to them. I think it would really help them learn for themselves and expand their knowledge about business. By doing that, it could really help them as far as developing goes. Katsaros's invention of the solar light bulb is a cool idea. It doesn't require energy to charge. Instead it uses the sun's solar energy. I agree with Polak with his quote:"the best way to help people is to treat them as consumer." Because things cost money, and it's going to cost more or less depending if there are consumers there buying it,therefore, making it cheap. For people in Kenya and Tanzania, the bulb provides the valuable resource of light to them because they live far away from the power grid. The bulb is a healthy and efficient tool for people and also for earth. It's helpful for both the earth and us just like what Katsaros wish his brilliant invention would do.

"But if you are going to sell things to people, you need to have respect for them because no one is going to buy something if you have contempt for them." This just seems like some excuse that he came up with to justify charging these people. Not only does giving it away for free leave the people feeling more grateful towards you, but it also ensures that the people who need it most get it. Most poor people have already accepted the helplessness of their situation. Just because you make them pay for things won't make them feel better(Although I do understand if these people are making a reasonable amount of money per year). And even then, this sounds like a very successful product...so even though he may start it off pretty cheap, he will probably soon notice all of the money that he is missing out on and raise the price somewhat drastically(supply and demand?).

For instance, I think it’s great when people give, for example shoes, to those who don’t have any. But what Katsaros and Polack are doing is really good for multiple reasons. Firstly, since they’re making money they can maintain themselves, they don’t have to worry about a lack of donations. Secondly, they are teaching these people the basics of business which will help them to eventually be able to sustain themselves. This in the long run, may help them more than forcing something upon them.

I believe Katsaros did something that will help the poor people in different countries. Making his company into a non-profit organization, I think this will really help the low income people that make less than $3 a day. Katsaros is more concerned for the other people’s lives rather than getting profit for his invention. It's a good thing that people actually care for the less fortunate.

I think what Katsaros is doing is really something. I think solar powered bulbs can really help the world not just financially but environmentally as well. The solar light bulbs are also probably better for our health. I hope that Katsaros is successful with making more solar powered inventions. I think that his idea is going to have a great impact on the world.

I think it is really awesome how a man invents a potentially multi-million dollar bulb and decides to give it to the poor. He is taking the needed step towards providing the poor and third-world countries with reusable power. I think we can all learn a few things from him. I admire him for his choices

I believe that his invention of a solar light bulb will be a very productive environmental friendly tool. It could change the way we use energy. The solar idea is great not only because it will be environmentally friendly, but it will be inexpensive once we learn how to produce it on a larger scale. Because we will always have solar energy, this would be a great resource that won't ever run out. I personally really do care about our environment and think humans need to keep it clean, so when I have children and they have children our energy sources won't be all used up or that our earth will be unsafe because it is toxic.

Honestly, at first I found Polak's original comment about making money off the backs of the poor to be a little absurd. Then, once I begin reading further about his whole idea of "social entrepreneurship," it actually began to make perfect sense to me. I think it's really cool that he's come up with such a concept that can help so many people at once. It's also a much better alternative to managing things in the way the Play Pump fiasco was, for example. It is extremely important to be sure that the suppliers aren't just giving away random things, but that they actually ask their consumers what it is that they need exactly.

Katsaros invention, the solar-powered light bulb, is a brilliant idea. The solar light bulb not only helps those living in an undeveloped nation, but it’s also very convenient because it uses the energy of the sun and doesn’t require electricity. Also the solar-powered light bulb doesn’t burn fossil fuels and isn’t as harmful as the light source that is currently being used in the undeveloped countries, kerosene lamps. Even though the light bulbs themselves are a genius idea, the fact that Katsaros is helping those in undeveloped nations because he wants to make a difference in their every day lives than for the want of money, is more remarkable. It is a great how one idea can make a huge impact on the world, and how the kindness and generosity of one man can be very beneficial to so many.

I think Katsaro's idea of selling the solar light bulb to the poors is really touching. I am glad there's someone like Katsaro and Polak living in this world having concern about the poors. They are not doing charity blindly; they see to the actual condition and really seeking for the best way to help them. Like the wise saying "Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime." I feel that's the most helpful way to improve the ways of life for the less fortunate people living in the developing countries.

I think it was good that Katsaros invented such a helpful thing. People all around the world have issues with money, so this invention will surely save money for them in the long run. People in impoverished countries would no longer have to buy the supplies to keep a dangerous kerosene lamp running. Instead, the light would be more simple and clean. It's nice how the invention of something with such a simple idea can help so many people.

I am very grateful that Katsaros invented the light bulb for the poor. Its not easy for the poor to have things with the low economy and incomes, but Katsaros invented something, whether he knows it or not, that will help millions in poverty. The impoverished community's will no longer need to wait until sunlight to study and work will be more easy on them. Katsaros has also made them think about other inventions that needs to be made.

First of all, the whole concept of the lightbulb is amazingly simple, yet advanced by using our current technology for the betterment of mankind and the word. I also completely agree with Katsaros's for-profit decision, in the sense that you can catch a fish for a man and he will have a meal for a day, or you can teach him how to fish and he will have food for life. In low income countries a large part of the issue is that humanitarian groups are not taking the proper approach to helping them. They give them supplies for a few months, but then what happens when they run out? It makes more sense to help build up their economies so that in the future, they can become a self-sustaining group of entrepreneurs.

This light-bulb Katsaros has created, does not harm the earth nor does it use energy except from the sun. The other ideas stated in this article are good ideas if only it didn't cost so much to fix and buy. Still, It's a great idea to stop using fuels and other harmful substances to create our everyday lifestyles, and using more natural things to help our planet.

While reading this article, I remembered my recent trip to India, and how I passed by some villages and houses where people could not even dream of affording a basic light bulb, let alone any kind of electricity, clean or unclean. Katsaros’s invention, in my opinion, was genius, because he took a step to make the world a better place. Obviously, one needs the light to study. The people living in poverty can now have a better chance of doing well in their education. Cleanliness also makes the world a more comfortable place to live in. It amazes me that there people now days using their brilliant mind to think of such simple ways to make the world environmentally friendly. Thanks to Katsaros’s idea, the people living in unfortunate situations have slightly better lives.

The invention of the solar-powered light bulb will be a great help to those in third world countries who can’t afford electricity like a lot of us in America can. Katsaros’ idea will be very useful because the sun is a permanent source of energy. So, by taking advantage of the sun, the invention will be able to be used for quite a while, as long as it works. Hopefully, in the near future, third world countries will benefit from this product and so can the rest of the countries.

Polak has the right idea how you should sell the products and not just give them away. It helps others get a job making and selling the product instead of just giving it away to people who it might not help as much. I hope more inventors follow this trend where it helps out everyone and not just the producers of the product. It also greatly helps the people in poverty by allowing them to pick and buy what they ant, and not just giving them the "one size fits all" package.

Katsaros definitely helped many people when he invented the solar light bulb. At the beginning of this article I disagreed with Polak’s plan because I thought non-profit organizations would have a bigger impact on poor developing areas of the world. But as I read on, I realized choosing a profitable organization would have been better. Things UNICEF offered them such as the merry go round pump and Play Pump wouldn’t be as effective as something they had bought with their own money. People in the developing areas know what they need most, and would use their money to pay for them accordingly.

Katsaros’s invention of the solar-powered light bulbs is amazing so as his decision of making it a for-profit organization. I understand why he did that because no one would like to make something brilliant like the solar-powered light bulbs and get nothing in return. I agree with Polak to not give things to the poverty because you don’t know that they will need it or not. Instead just sell it to them so they can have an idea of what they need and what they don’t need. Donating the pumps was not a good idea. It was just given to them and a professional have to fix it every time it broke down. It shows that it was a bad idea from the start. As for Katsaros, I believe that his light bulbs will be a great success and great for the economy.

Mr. Katsaros is brilliant for inventing the solar powered light bulb. Since it does not require the burning of fossil fuels to power it, it benefits the environment, and people who do not have electricity can now have it. I think it is a good idea to make it a profit because this invention is a good idea. Even though making money off the poor seems wrong, selling them is better than giving them away. You know who actually needs it and who doesn’t. The Play Pumps were not successful because they gave them away to people who did not want them. If the solar powered light bulbs are to be given away, it can be a failure since some people do not even need or want them, so it will not benefit anyone in the end.
